Experience exciting lecture series: a treasure trove of knowledge at the University of Paderborn!

Several exciting lecture series on socially relevant topics will start at the University of Paderborn in the summer semester of 2025. The “UPB for Future” series, which deals with sustainability, opens on April 10th. Mirko Drotschmann will start with his lecture “Tutoring on the couch: Why education is booming on YouTube and Co.”. This lecture series takes place every Thursday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in lecture hall L1 and does not require prior registration. The topics range from ecological and social aspects to economic issues and the challenges of climate change and sustainable consumption. Teachers and experts from various disciplines will provide insights into the complexity of the topic of sustainability to broaden participants' understanding of how uni-paderborn.de reported.

In addition to the sustainability lecture, the international lecture series “Cultural Perspectives on Power” is offered. This starts on April 9th ​​and takes place every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the O1 lecture hall. Here Prof. Dr. Sebastian Luft will give the first lecture. The guest speakers represent a special enrichment: Prof. Dr. Jacob Rump from Creighton University in the USA and Prof. Dr. Felix Ó Murchadha from the University of Galway in Ireland will also present their perspectives.

Diverse topics and perspectives

As part of the summer semester, the lecture series “Music, Demons and Despots” by Melissa Maria Korbmacher and Dr. Anna Ricke directed. This takes place on Wednesdays from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. in the dome hall of the Detmold University of Music, starting on April 23rd with a lecture by Korbmacher on "Topos Tyrann. Nero in the Baroque Opera". The themes concern the interaction between music and power.

Another highlight will be the lecture series on “Sara and Hagar”. This international lecture at the Institute for Evangelical Theology will be held in English on two Wednesday evenings. The cooperation with the Paderborn Center for Comparative Theology and Cultural Studies as well as US universities enables an exciting exchange. Participants can participate either digitally or in person in room L1.201.

Deepening into media studies topics

Also new to the program is the lecture series “Elementary Ontologies and Media between Politicization and Depoliticization,” which takes place on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in room E2.339. The starting signal will take place on April 29th with a lecture by Dr. Veit Braun from the Goethe University Frankfurt am Main. Media science issues are brought into focus here.

The university's Institute of History also offers a series of lectures on current research from the history of the 19th to 21st centuries. This starts on April 22nd and takes place on Tuesdays from 4:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. in room O1.224. Dr. phil. Medardus Brehl from the Ruhr University Bochum opens the series with a lecture on "The World Viewers. Political Aesthetics and Self-Empowerment in Nazi Autonarratives of the Struggle Period." This illustrates the relevance of historical analyzes for current discourses.
