Bielefeld University is launching the “Fascination of Language” series on March 10th with free events on linguistic creativity.

Fascination with language: Creativity, AI and children in the focus of the VHS Bielefeld!

On March 10, 2025, a series of events entitled “Faszination Language” will start at the Bielefeld Adult Education Center. This series, organized by the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1646 at Bielefeld University, aims to explore linguistic creativity in everyday life and provide a forum for exchange and discussion. Professor Dr. Ralf Vogel, the executive spokesman of the SFB 1646, will lead the opening event.
The program covers a range of topics such as AI-generated language and the conditions for creative use of language. An example is the creative expression “The traffic light is ready!” presented, inspired by the famous words of Giovanni Trapattoni. Comprehensive discussions, question-and-answer sessions and opportunities for participation in research are also planned in order to include all interested members of the public.

The events take place in the Murnau Hall of the adult education center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and are free for everyone. Those interested can register via the VHS portal. The following dates are planned from March 10th:

  • 10. März: „Sprache und Kreativität: Wie passt das zusammen?“
  • 28. März: „Wer ist kreativer, ChatGPT oder ich?“
  • 12. Mai: „Wovon hängt ab, ob kreativer Sprachgebrauch gelingt?“
  • 16. Juni: „Wie kreativ sind Kinder im Spracherwerb?“

Language support through AI

In recent years, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly important in the world of education, particularly in language development. AI-supported language tools offer new approaches to personalize the learning process. These technologies analyze students’ strengths and weaknesses and create personalized learning plans. An example from a Berlin elementary school shows that a language learning app can bring about significant improvements in students' language comprehension and expression skills. Tailor-made exercises can make teachers’ work significantly easier.

However, there are also challenges in introducing AI into schools. There is often a lack of a robust technical infrastructure and the need for IT specialists for implementation and maintenance is high. Data protection issues are also a key concern, particularly regarding the collection of extensive data on learning behavior and language development. Ethical questions regarding the categorization of students through automated systems also need to be addressed. It is critical that AI tools support, not replace, teachers by taking on repetitive tasks and providing accurate analysis.

Scientific approaches to language development

Another goal of the events at Bielefeld University and the SFB 1646 is to enable low-threshold conversations in public spaces. Conversations in city squares are also recorded in order to analyze linguistic creativity. The conversations are transcribed and creative expressions are marked so that their peculiarities and meanings can be examined. This analysis is intended to formulate new research questions and test existing linguistic theories.
The SFB 1646 researches linguistic creativity in a total of 16 sub-projects, which include over 70 scientists from various disciplines. The diversity of perspectives enables a comprehensive analysis of phenomena such as sound formation, meaning and non-verbal communication, which ultimately also promotes linguistic education.

In summary, it can be seen that both the events at the Bielefeld Adult Education Center and the developments in the area of AI-supported language support aim to promote creative and individual learning and to give society new impulses in the use of language. Access to education should be improved through innovative approaches and current research.
