FernUniversität Hagen receives record funding for innovative teaching!
The FernUniversität in Hagen receives funding of almost seven million euros from the Innovation in University Teaching Foundation. This marks a milestone in support for the university and represents the highest amount the university has ever won for teaching in a nationwide competition. The aim of this funding is to develop a university-wide, future-oriented teaching architecture that responds to the needs of digital higher education.
Overall, the FernUniversität was recognized as one of four universities in North Rhine-Westphalia in the “Teaching Architecture” funding line. fernuni-hagen.de reports that the funding recognizes the excellence of digital teaching at this institution and underlines its role as a model university in the field of digital education.
Goals of the “LEAD:FUH” project
The funded project is called “LEAD:FUH – Learning Empowerment through Analytics and Data”. It aims to create a sustainable teaching architecture that promotes the evidence-based use of Learning Analytics (LA) in higher education teaching. To this end, all five faculties of the FernUniversität are involved in order to develop differentiated strategies for different specialist cultures.
The project is based on an interdisciplinary preliminary project that already integrates several participating centers. Three central applications of learning analytics are being piloted in the university's largest bachelor's degree programs: dropout predictions and early intervention options, the personalization of learning content using artificial intelligence, and the support of self-regulated learning through intelligent dashboards.
Publicly accessible resources
The project aims to provide an open access LAV toolkit and a 360° showroom for organizational development. This also enables other universities to develop their own learning analytics strategies and optimize the use of these technologies. The FernUniversität is thus positioning itself as a cooperation university for data-supported teaching innovations in the German-speaking educational area.
These developments are part of a larger trend in higher education shaped by digital technologies. bmftr.bund.de highlights that individualization, flexibility and mobility are central aspects of this transformation. The integration of artificial intelligence into teaching formats offers new opportunities for students, teachers and university administrations.
In addition, initiatives such as the University Forum for Digitalization and the AI Campus are strengthening networking and training in digital skills. Since 2014, these programs have been working to support universities in digitalization and to research innovative teaching-learning formats.
