Folklore meets the grotesque: premiere of folkLOL in Zollverein!

The interdisciplinary dance performance “folkLOL” will celebrate its premiere on May 30, 2025 in the SANAA building on the Zollverein World Heritage Campus. Six performers, four musicians and two designers from the fields of music, physical theater and dance at the Folkwang University of the Arts are designing this creative project. In a unique interplay, the piece will explore themes of the strange, absurd and grotesque, which act as sources of strength, identity and joy. Folkwang reports that The goal of the performance is to create a kaleidoscope of scenes characterized by ritual, chaos, laughter and embarrassment.

The performers are Valentina Restrepo Giraldo, Fiammetta Ruggiero, Darya Myasnikova, Sasha Krutikova, Emma Stacey and Djamila Polo. These creative minds are accompanied by the musicians Başak Merev, Anatole Besson, Jakob Jentgens and Daniel Ismaili. Brunella Sabatino is responsible for the dramaturgy of the piece, while the visual aspects are shaped by the designers Pau Holtkamp and Laura Kolar. The creation of “folkLOL” represents an exciting examination of the themes of tradition, absurdity and transformation on a physical level.

Rituals and their effects

In the context of “folkLOL”, rituals are a central component. In educational science, various articles, including by Kathrin Audehm, examine the meaning of ritual and language in a performative context. Audehm describes that the effect of rituals is based on a collective belief, which is strongly reflected in educational work. Her analysis is based on the concepts of Pierre Bourdieu and Judith Butler, with Bourdieu addressing the magic of rituals in the context of power and social status. The pedagogy specialist portal points this out, that education can be viewed as an ideological practice based on these interactive dynamic processes.

The examination of rituals does not only take place in performance, but is also important for educational science. This field research in ritual research, as summarized in the “ZfE Journal of Educational Science”, shows different approaches and perspectives on this topic. Ewi-psy takes stock, that rituals play an important role in contexts such as school and are deeply rooted in social dynamics.

Details about the performance

The first performance of “folkLOL” will take place on Friday, May 30th at 7:30 p.m., followed by another performance on Saturday, May 31st, also at 7:30 p.m. The price for an entry ticket is 7 euros, reduced price 5 euros. Tickets can be reserved via the Folkwang ticket hotline at 0201_4903-231 or by email to karten(at)folkwang-uni.de.

“FolkLOL” not only offers an artistic performance, but also creates a significant space in which the interactions between tradition, absurdity and physicality can be explored. Whether in the performance itself or through the theoretical reflections on it, the magic of the rituals remains a central anchor point.
