Folkwang students bring the musical IT WILL BE AGAIN” to the stage!

On March 9, 2025, Folkwang Musical students will bring a self-developed musical called “IT WILL BE AGAIN” to the stage. The performances take place in the Pina Bausch Theater on the Essen-Werden campus. The students Anna Donosa-Danila, Albert Gaßmann, Lino Kalich, Timm Moritz Marquardt and Katalin Rohse are responsible for the piece development and playing, while the music comes from Merlin Hellenkamp, a bachelor's student in the Jazz Performing Artist program with a focus on drums. The entire project is accompanied by an orchestra made up of students from departments 1 and 2, which underlines the interdisciplinary collaboration at the Folkwang University of the Arts.

The personal work that leads to the performance of the musical is an essential part of the Folkwang Musical study plan. It demands not only creativity and initiative, but also discipline from the students. They have to put on an entire musical independently before it is viewed by a teacher. Performances are scheduled for February 20 and 21, 2025, with two Friday performances at 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Remaining tickets cost 6.00 euros, with reduced prices of 4.00 euros, and may be available at the box office.

Interdisciplinarity and study programs

Folkwang University is known for its diverse and interdisciplinary courses. In addition to musical production, it also offers teaching courses in music. These are aimed at future teachers for primary schools as well as for primary, secondary, secondary and comprehensive schools. High schools are also part of the offer. The course content focuses on artistic practice and includes pedagogical, didactic and scientific focuses that are put into practice in collaboration with schools.

The bachelor's degree (B.A.) lasts 6 semesters and is followed by a 4-semester master's degree (M.Ed.). From 2024, an interdisciplinary bachelor's degree program (BA6+) will also be offered, which will take place exclusively at Folkwang University in the first year. Students benefit from intensification in areas such as school music-making practice and digital music-making practice. In addition to the academic content, students have the opportunity to gain active artistic experience in numerous ensembles such as the jazz combo, big band or symphony orchestra.

Performances and collaborations

Folkwang University promotes exchange between artists, scientists and educators not only in teacher training courses, but also in other areas. In addition, numerous collaborations with institutions such as the Ruhr Piano Festival or the Munich Radio Orchestra are being sought. Excursions and stays abroad are funded by the Erasmus program, which supports international exchange for students.

Further information about the degree programs, aptitude tests and the extensive offerings at Folkwang University can be found directly on the website of the institution. Preparations are already in full swing for the upcoming performance at the Pina Bausch Theater in February and the students are working intensively on the realization of their creative project.
