Further training in MINT: Shaping the future – Register now!

On March 26, 2025, the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) will hold a comprehensive training course for teachers of the MINT subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences). This initiative aims to promote the exchange of ideas and concepts that will inspire young people to study STEM subjects. Further training is particularly important with a view to combating the shortage of skilled workers in these areas.

Registration for the event ends on March 19, 2025. Interested participants can also register until March 9, 2025 for an exclusive tour of the research greenhouses in the new biology building at HHU. These tours not only serve to impart knowledge, but also for personal exchange with researchers

Topics and lectures

The content of the training includes the latest developments in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics and physics. The lectures include exciting topics such as “How cells talk to each other” by Prof. Dr. Simone Prömel and “From stem cell research to fat tomatoes” by Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Simon. Furthermore, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Markus Suta will give a talk on “Headlights with chemistry”. A special highlight are the lectures by Marco Kirschner and Tobias Böhlefeld from the Düsseldorf district government, who address the question: “Is the climate change still realistic?” deal with.

The event is organized in cooperation with the Düsseldorf district government and the Düsseldorf Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This underlines the great importance that training in MINT subjects has for the social and economic future.

Goals of further training and MINT teacher training

A central goal of the training is to establish personal contacts with researchers and to exchange ideas and concepts to stimulate MINT study programs. In addition to the advanced training at the HHU, there are numerous other projects for STEM teacher training that are supported by renowned universities such as the Free University of Berlin and the Technical University of Munich. These projects aim to continuously improve teacher training in mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology.

Furthermore, the integration of digital media in teacher training plays a central role in getting both students and teachers excited about scientific content. Emphasis is placed not only on the technical training, but also on the didactic training. This is done, among other things, through the development of teaching-learning modules, which have been tested and optimized in various programs in recent years.

Some of the initiatives that make STEM teaching more effective include the German Center for Mathematics Teacher Training (DZLM) and support from numerous foundations. These institutions offer practical training programs for teachers throughout Germany and promote close cooperation between schools and science.

Thanks to these comprehensive approaches, the HHU is not only an important player in teacher training, but also part of a large-scale network that is committed to the goal of sustainably strengthening MINT education in Germany.
