Maximilian Steinbeis: Honorary doctorate for the protection of the constitution!
On July 2, 2025, the Faculty of Law awarded the University of Münster the honorary doctorate to Maximilian Steinbeis. This ceremony honored his “extraordinary services” to the protection of the constitution and legal communication. Steinbeis, born in Munich in 1970, worked as a court reporter and worked for the “Handelsblatt” for around ten years.
A central part of Steinbeis' commitment is the founding of the "Verfassungsblog" in 2009, of which he remains editor-in-chief today. The blog is described as a showcase for German legal scholarship and reaches a wide audience. Steinbeis' contributions are not only informative, but are also received by the media and courts, which underlines his crucial role in the legal discourse landscape.
Influential contributions and public debates
Steinbeis' article “A People's Chancellor”, published in the South German newspaper in 2019, initiated a significant debate about the protection of the Federal Constitutional Court. This debate led to the adoption of a law by the Bundestag in December 2024. This law further strengthens the Federal Constitutional Court, which illustrates the relevance of Steinbeis' work.

The Faculty of Law at the University of Münster is one of many renowned faculties in Germany. Over 30 chairs serve as a platform for around 4,940 students who are trained in a variety of legal disciplines. Universities like that University of Cologne or the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich are also among the top performers and overall offer a variety of academic opportunities in law.
Maximilian Steinbeis’ honorary doctorate is not only a personal award, but also a sign of the importance of legal communication in today’s world. His influence extends far beyond the academic sphere and has a decisive influence on public discussions on legal issues.
