New CATALPA research center strengthens Leibniz network in education!

On April 3, 2025, the CATALPA research center became the FernUniversität in Hagen accepted as a new member of the Leibniz Research Network for Educational Potentials (LERN). This decision was made unanimously during the 26th LERN general meeting on April 2nd at the RWI in Essen.

With the integration of CATALPA, LERN now includes a total of 28 institutions. The network has set itself the goal of increasing the visibility of the Leibniz Association in educational issues. Prof. Dr. Marcus Hasselhorn, chairman of the LERN speaker group, emphasized CATALPA's existing collaborations with various Leibniz institutes, which form the basis for fruitful collaboration.

Research approaches and goals of CATALPA

CATALPA, led by Prof. Dr. Marcus Specht, is pursuing an innovative real-world laboratory concept that aims to improve higher education. The research center employs around 60 people and uses prototypical approaches to quickly transfer scientific findings into practice. This methodology is intended not only to optimize teaching, but also to contribute to theory building in social science areas.

A central concern of LERN is to view education as the foundation for professional success and social participation. In this context, the network strives to make better use of the potential of education and to develop viable concepts and reforms. CATALPA wants to use technologies in the education sector in a scalable manner so that both students and teachers benefit from the resulting added value.

With over 70,000 digital enrollees, the FernUniversität in Hagen offers a comprehensive analysis basis for CATALPA and its cooperation partners. This large number of students is a clear indicator of the potential that arises from a close connection between research and practical application in higher education.
