New research center in Dortmund: 90 million euros for innovation!
On October 14, 2025, the new building of the CALEDO (Center for Advanced Liquid-Phase Engineering Dortmund) at the Technical University of Dortmund was ceremoniously opened. This innovative research center aims to create optimal working conditions for scientists and focus on the development of advanced solvents that can significantly improve the effectiveness of drugs. The project is the result of a large-scale collaboration and received a total investment of around 90 million euros, which is supported by the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Technical University of Dortmund.
CALEDO covers a usable area of 3,600 square meters and comprises four floors. The building is an architectural masterpiece, designed by the renowned Gerber architectural firm from Dortmund. It is characterized by reddish brickwork, rounded corners and all-round windows, which emphasize not only the aesthetics but also the functionality of the new building. In its inner courtyard there are green areas that are intended to contribute to the creative development of researchers.
Furnishings and equipment
The equipment in the laboratories in CALEDO is state-of-the-art. Investments in large-scale equipment, which cost around ten million euros, enable modern analytical procedures. This research building offers special laboratory areas tailored to the needs of the faculties of biological and chemical engineering, chemistry and chemical biology and physics. High demands on the technical building equipment guarantee that scientific activities can be carried out at the highest level.
The project was realized in close collaboration with the Construction and Property Management NRW (BLB NRW), which underlines the many facets of the support from various institutions. This cooperation makes it clear how important interactions between different levels of the education system, as well as between the federal and state governments, are for the promotion of science and research.
Transport connections and accessibility
The location of CALEDO within the Technical University of Dortmund is particularly advantageous for connections to local public transport. The university has its own S-Bahn station called “Dortmund University”, from which there are regular connections to the Dortmund main station and the Düsseldorf main station, which also serves Düsseldorf Airport. Several bus lines also offer regular trips to the university.
The accessibility of keywords such as innovation, research and development is supported by the commitment of the “Joint Science Conference” (GWK) in Germany. This institution promotes exchange between the federal and state governments as well as the joint promotion of science and research. Through strategies developed by the ministries of science and finance, Germany as a location for innovation is continually strengthened and promoted, which is impressively demonstrated by institutions such as CALEDO.
