Paderborn: Platinum for a healthy campus – university receives international award!
On July 17, 2025, the University of Paderborn was awarded the renowned “FISU Healthy Campus Label” in platinum. This award took place as part of the FISU World Conference in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, while the World University Games are currently being held in Germany. The University of Paderborn is one of only nine German universities and 180 universities from a total of 43 countries that have received this prestigious label. University President Prof. Dr. Matthias Bauer and Ulrich Kussin, heads of university sports, accepted the award and emphasized the importance of well-being and health at universities. uni-paderborn.de reports that the initiative is based on international recommendations, including the WHO Health Promoting Universities project.
The “FISU Healthy Campus Label” is awarded in different levels, from “Certified” to “Platinum”, depending on the scope and quality of the measures implemented. The assessment focuses on key areas such as physical fitness, mental health, nutrition, social responsibility and sustainability. FISU, the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire, is the largest international university sports federation, founded in 1949 and promoting the role of university sports worldwide.
A holistic approach to student well-being
The FISU Healthy Campus program was initiated to improve the health and well-being of students and employees at universities. The digital platform enables the tracking and optimization of health parameters at educational institutions. The program also includes a network of 30 student health experts who take a holistic approach. This includes aspects such as physical activity, healthy campus management, mental health, nutrition and disease prevention. fisu.net explains that the initiative also aims to stop the dangerous trend among young adults to neglect their health while studying.
Universities that participate in the FISU Healthy Campus program can benefit from various benefits. This includes exchanging best practices, promoting interdisciplinary collaborations and improving the university's image through international certification. In addition, participation helps reduce dropout rates and promotes quality of life on campus. The initiative makes a significant contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and can positively influence the university's placement in relevant rankings.
Continuous review of results
A special feature of the program is the audit process, which takes place in the second year after the label was awarded. The results from the first year are carefully checked and documented. This ensures that measures to improve health and well-being are implemented sustainably and effectively. FISU President Leonz Eder and FISU Vice President Dr. Verena Burk presented the award, underlining the importance of a healthy campus culture.
