Prof. Dellnitz: Farewell to Paderborn's mathematics grandmaster!
On Friday, March 27, 2025, a colloquium in honor of Prof. Dr. took place at the University of Paderborn. Michael Dellnitz, who said goodbye after many years as dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics (EIM). Numerous guests from science, research and the Paderborn city society took part in this event. Prof. Dellnitz is not only a respected mathematician, but also the initiator and long-time chairman of the Paderborn Institute for Industrial Mathematics.
As part of the event, Dean Prof. Dr. Jürgen Klüners describes the impressive influence of Prof. Dellnitz on the faculty. Other speakers included Prof. Dr. Johannes Blömer, Prof. Dr. Balázs Kovács and Dr. Andreas Jolmes, who also highlighted his contribution to mathematics and the university. This made it possible to look back on the important career of Prof. Dellnitz, who was appointed to the University of Paderborn in 1998 and previously worked as a professor at the University of Bayreuth.
Scientific achievements and commitment
Prof. Dr. Dellnitz received his doctorate in Hamburg in 1989 and worked as a postdoc in the USA. Since joining the University of Paderborn, he has made significant research contributions in the field of dynamic systems and optimization. He was significantly involved in various DFG special research areas and acted as spokesman for a DFG graduate school. He was also co-editor of the “Journal of Computational Dynamics” and was able to gain valuable experience as a fellow at the Zuse Institute in Berlin and as a John von Neumann visiting professor at the Technical University of Munich.
Another highlight of the event were the lectures by Prof. Dr. Oliver Junge and Prof. Dr. Christof Schütte, who addressed various research topics of Prof. Dellnitz. The celebration was accompanied musically by the artists Ulrich Lettermann and Eckard Wiemann, which contributed to the festive atmosphere.
New research projects at the University of Paderborn
The official project is entitled “Simultaneous development and testing of Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) using the application example of an electrically powered autonomous vehicle – SET CPS” and has a duration of 36 months. The aim of the project is to make the development and testing of autonomous electric vehicles faster, more cost-effective and more resource-efficient. The focus is on optimizing consumption and range as well as improving driving comfort and safety.
By using the latest mathematical methods from multi-objective optimization, intelligent, simulation-based processes are to be developed. These will be integrated into dSPACE's existing tool chain to make the vehicle development and testing processes more efficient. dSPACE is known for its integrated hardware and software tools for developing and testing electronic control devices and has more than 1,700 employees worldwide. e.GO Mobile AG, which was founded in 2015 and has over 450 employees, specializes in electric vehicles and produces, among other things, the e.GO Life.
With these developments and the farewell of Prof. Dr. Dellnitz, the University of Paderborn not only shows its appreciation for deserving scientists, but also takes an important step in applied mathematics and industrial cooperation.
