Slide from the Mathetower: fun and excitement guaranteed for students!

On April 1, 2025, work on installing a slide on the Mathetower will begin at the Technical University of Dortmund. Prof. Manfred Bayer, the university's rector, announced this innovative project that aims to promote the well-being of students and employees. The slide will run from the ninth floor of the Mathetower to the ground floor and will not only increase the fun of campus life, but also significantly improve access to the cafeteria and the S-Bahn stop.

A feasibility study determined that the ninth floor was the optimal entry point for the slide. This project is particularly important for the users of the top three floors. Prof. Bayer hopes that the introduction of this fun abbreviation will have a positive impact on the quality of life of students.

Potential extensions and usage

If successful, TU Dortmund University plans to further expand the concept. Additional slides could be installed on campus or the existing slide could be expanded to include new elements such as a free fall section and optional water flushing with high-pressure massage jets on hot summer days. On weekends, the slide will also be accessible to non-TU members for a fee, with the proceeds going towards creating another feature, a loop.

This approach, as described on the TU Dresden website, reflects the desire to introduce innovative measures for campus design. The campus is continually being developed, with a focus on sustainable design and activity in the outdoor spaces.

Sustainability and future vision

The sustainability strategy of TU Dortmund is based on the guidelines of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the North Rhine-Westphalia Data Protection Act. Data collected as part of slide surveys is securely stored and pseudonymized. Each participant generates their own identification number to protect their privacy. Data protection declarations and contact information for queries are available to ensure transparency and legal protection.

The measures planned under the aspect of the cost-benefit ratio are also based on the campus design master plan, which promotes the integration of teaching and learning locations and at the same time is intended to increase the biodiversity and climate resilience of the surrounding area. The campus is seen not only as a place of education, but also as a space for encounters and relaxation.

Overall, the slide at the Mathetower will not only represent a new highlight for the students, but will also be seen as a step towards a sustainably designed campus landscape that remains in the flow of development.
