Skateboarding in class: training for teachers at the sports college!

The German Sport University Cologne offers comprehensive training on integrating skateboarding into school lessons. This training offer is aimed at sports teachers, sports students and teaching staff in all-day programs. During the two days of the event on March 7th and 8th, 2026, the training is intended to cover the growing need for qualified teachers. Skateboarding, which has been an official Olympic discipline since the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, is becoming increasingly popular in Germany.

It turns out that skateboarding can be particularly valuable for children and teenagers who are less interested in traditional sports. This sports program complements physical education lessons in the movement area “gliding, driving, rolling” and not only promotes motor skills such as coordination and balance, but also the self-competence of young athletes.

Positive effects of skateboarding

The positive physical and psychological aspects of skateboarding are diverse. It strengthens the muscles, especially in the legs, back and stomach. Social skills are also promoted, especially when skateboarding is practiced in groups. Students learn teamwork, mutual support and social interaction. These experiences not only help improve fitness, but also increase self-confidence and persistence.

Another advantage is the cognitive load. The concentration and focus required in skateboarding can significantly improve students' cognitive abilities. However, it should be borne in mind that skateboarding cannot be integrated into school lessons without preparation. A lack of trained teachers is a central problem, and many schools do not have the necessary offerings to introduce this trend sport.

Training and support

In addition to methodological and didactic basics, the advanced training at the German Sport University Cologne also includes sports psychological and medical aspects. The participants are trained in theory and practice and receive valuable information on safety aspects, protective equipment and the practical implementation of skateboarding lessons.

  • Inhalte der Weiterbildung:
  • Material-Workshop
  • Praktische Einführung in Basisbewegungen und Tricks
  • Hilfestellungen

A free introductory skateboarding course before further training is also available, so that even teachers without previous experience can be well prepared. Participants receive a handout with techniques and useful links to training videos to deepen their knowledge.

The registration deadline for the training is February 22, 2025, and the participation fee is EUR 238.00, with reduced prices for students and special conditions. Since skateboarding has so far played a subordinate role in German schools, such further training measures are urgently needed in order to make physical education lessons more diverse. The sporting activity therefore offers opportunities for an innovative further development of school sport.

The German Sport University Cologne has recognized that skateboarding can be a valuable element in physical education classes, provided there are enough qualified teachers available. Over 2,000 skate parks in Germany demonstrate the popularity of this sport and create ideal conditions to introduce students to the sport while at the same time maintaining safety aspects.

If more teachers are able to teach skateboarding, this could not only enrich the physical education curriculum, but also have a lasting impact on students' physical and social development.
