Attention students: Digital elections start now!
The committee elections are currently taking place at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. The period of electronic voting extends from June 16 to June 26, 2025, 10:00 a.m. All students are eligible to vote for all committees, while other members are only eligible to vote for the faculty councils. Election notifications have already been sent to all eligible voters via their university email accounts. Access to the election is via a special button in the election portal, which requires individual access data for the identity management system.
The voting processes are clearly structured. Students can access the digital voting booth via the “Online Election 2025” tile, where they can fill out and submit their ballot according to the instructions provided. Kirsten Ugowski, the returning officer, called on students to actively participate in the election and cast their votes.
Impact of elections on campus life
The elections are of great importance because they have a decisive influence on campus life and student offerings. This includes events such as summer cult, the awarding of semester tickets as well as counseling and anti-discrimination work. The Student Parliament (SP), which represents self-governing bodies within the university, is particularly important. However, the elections for the SP will not take place this year, but will be held from June 3rd to 6th, 2024.
The SP not only influences the allocation of funds, but also the focus of content and examination regulations in the faculties. It is composed of 17 voting members. These in turn elect the board of the General Student Committee (AStA), which acts as the executive body of the SP. The SP is the highest decision-making body of the student body and usually has a term of office of one year.
Important information about self-administration
The AStA is responsible for planning and implementing student events. Part of the financial resources, which comes from the semester fee of 310.78 euros, goes towards the semester ticket, university sports and university radio. There are also special refunds of the semester ticket fee for socially needy students, which underlines the university's social responsibility.
The universities are organized democratically and require the active participation of students in elections. These decisions not only affect daily life on campus, but also fundamental academic aspects such as examination regulations and the design of the university. Therefore, the informed voice and participation of all students eligible to vote is essential to ensure representative representation. The website of the University of Kassel, which sheds light on the context of student elections and self-government, provides information on this.
