University blocks access: Dynamo Dresden fan march causes chaos!
On Saturday, May 3, 2025, access to the university buildings at Bielefeld University will be restricted for security reasons. The measure comes into force from 12 p.m. as the city informed the university of an upcoming fan march by Dynamo Dresden fans to the stadium. It is estimated that around 2,000 people will take part in the march, which will begin at the university campus and lead to the stadium. The main university building will remain accessible via the entrances on the south side from Konsequence Street, while all other entrances, including the main entrance, will be closed.
The library and the library service center (BDZ) will be open regularly on May 3rd. However, the specialist libraries in the interim library and in Building X must close at 12 p.m. Rector Angelika Epple showed understanding for these necessary security measures.
Events during the European Football Championship in Berlin
At the same time, an important football match is taking place in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Spain took on Croatia and won 3-0. The atmosphere in the capital was characterized by a peaceful mood before the game. According to the police, numerous fans were out and about in City West, with the Federal Police being supported by around 3,000 officers to ensure everything ran smoothly.
A “happy and exuberant atmosphere” was noted around the Olympic Stadium, and the Berlin fire department provided an additional 380 emergency services for security. Despite traffic jams and traffic disruptions in City-West due to the fan march, there were no significant incidents. Parts of Kufürstendamm and Budapester Strasse were closed to traffic.
Fan gatherings and security measures
Up to 8,000 supporters of both teams gathered on Breitscheidplatz, while the fan mile in front of the Brandenburg Gate was well filled. However, the originally planned large fan march turned out to be smaller than expected; many fans chose the train as a means of transport. Only a small march with several hundred participants actually marched to the stadium.
At the Olympic Stadium, Croatian fans, up to 50,000 in attendance, were in the majority, while the goals for Spain were scored by Morata, Fabian and Carvajal. The event, which was the first European Championship game in the capital, was sold out with 71,000 spectators.
While Bielefeld University is preparing for the fan march, the events surrounding the European Football Championship in Berlin illustrate the importance of security precautions and preventative measures to ensure that such major events take place peacefully.
