Witten/Herdecke: New cooperation with zeb for innovative financial research!
The Private University of Witten/Herdecke (UW/H) and the consultancy zeb have agreed on a cooperation with the aim of establishing a part-time educational offer in the area of “financial services, finance and banking”. This partnership is particularly aimed at closer collaboration in banking and financial research and teaching. Together, the two institutions want to develop third-party funded research activities and transfer the theoretical findings into practical application.
Dr. Markus Thiesmeyer from zeb emphasizes the high rating of the UW/H in teaching and research and sees great synergy effects between the university and the management consultancy. Prof. Dr. Martin Butzlaff from the UW/H emphasizes the added value of the cooperation, especially in complementing the range of courses in the areas of management and entrepreneurship as well as interdisciplinary courses.
New educational offerings and programs
The initiative includes the founding of the zeb.Institute for Financial Services, which is led by Prof. Dr. Michael Lister and acts as an affiliated institute of the Faculty of Economics and Society at the UW/H. A part-time bachelor's degree and a part-time master's degree program are offered, which are specifically designed for employees in the financial services industry and financial intermediaries. These programs are intended to promote students' critical reflection skills and creative problem-solving skills.
zeb's philosophy places particular emphasis on the practical transfer of scientific findings to companies, which benefits the strategic orientation of this collaboration. In this way, the university lives up to its role as an innovative educational institution that offers relevant and future-oriented qualifications.
University background
The UW/H is a private, state-recognized university in Witten, North Rhine-Westphalia, and was the first German private institution to receive accreditation as a “university”. This enables the university to award bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees as well as the German habilitation. The university has made great progress in recent years and now has more than 2,500 enrolled students with extensive support from 582 staff, including 71 professors.
However, the college has also experienced significant challenges and controversies, including a severe financial crisis in 2008 and numerous restructurings that led to financial stability. Nevertheless, the UW/H remains respected in national rankings, particularly in the medical and business education sectors, and has regularly been recognized for its high quality of education.
International university cooperation
In the context of increasing globalization, German universities are becoming increasingly involved in international cooperation. Although the UW/H is a private institution, it follows the standards set by the Code for German University Projects Abroad. This code requires both academic and ethical minimum standards for international university projects. Collaborations like the one between the UW/H and zeb show the importance of transnational education and the university's willingness to position itself as a quality-conscious and interculturally sensitive partner in global educational competition.
