Future of energy supply: TU Dortmund researches sustainable solutions!

The campus of the Technical University of Dortmund (TU Dortmund) is a central location for students, research and teaching in the fields of technology and natural sciences. Located close to the Dortmund West motorway junction, the university is easy to reach by car or public transport.

The campus is spread over several areas, including the north and south campuses, as well as the technology park. A charging station for electric cars on Campus Nord, Vogelpothsweg, makes charging easier for environmentally conscious drivers. In addition, the “Dortmund University” S-Bahn station is directly on Campus North, which ensures a regular connection to the city center and beyond. The S-Bahn line S1 offers trips every 15 or 30 minutes to Dortmund main station and to Düsseldorf via Bochum, Essen and Duisburg.

Public transport connections

The university is also easily accessible via various bus routes, including 445, 447 and 462. DSW21 offers an interactive route map that makes travel planning easier for students. For travelers using Dortmund Airport, the AirportExpress is available, which takes around 20 minutes to Dortmund Central Station. Düsseldorf Airport, around 60 kilometers away, can also be reached directly via the S-Bahn from the university train station.

The H-Bahn, a diverse landmark of TU Dortmund, runs every 10 minutes between Dortmund Eichlinghofen and the Technology Center via Campus South and University S. The second H-Bahn line runs every 5 minutes between Campus North and South and can be reached in just two minutes.

Academic events and modules

In the 2024/2025 winter semester, TU Dortmund University is planning an in-person event entitled “Components and Systems for Electromobility”. This is primarily aimed at students of electrical engineering, information technology and computer science. Before taking part, it is recommended to clarify details with the IT Examination Office. The associated documents will be provided in the Moodle workroom and registration for the event is mandatory.

The lecture and exercise documents will be available for download from the start of the event. Changes will be communicated to participants in a timely manner via Moodle. Automated activation in the Moodle system takes place within 24 hours of registration. In addition, the form of the module examination will be announced later.

Research at TU Dortmund

The Institute for Energy Systems at TU Dortmund University is one of the leading German university institutes in the areas of energy systems, energy efficiency and energy management. Under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Rehtanz and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Timm Faulwasser is striving for a sustainable electricity system of the future. The research focuses on electrical networks and addresses important topics such as flexible transport and distribution networks and the system integration of renewable energy sources.

Other research focuses include the efficient use of energy, the electricity industry and markets as well as the development and analysis of new technologies in process control technology, control technology and power electronics. The integration of these solutions into the existing energy supply takes place taking into account legal and regulatory framework conditions, with the aim of an environmentally friendly, sustainable and secure energy supply.

Overall, TU Dortmund offers a variety of opportunities for students who want to deepen both practical and theoretical aspects of electromobility and related areas. The infrastructure, combined with innovative courses and research projects, is oriented towards the future and the requirements of the market.
