Future projects for sports students: Practical experiences in Paderborn
On June 11, 2025 took place at the University of Paderborn a seminar on the topic of “Applied Project Management” took place as part of the bachelor’s degree program “Applied Sports Science”. The aim of this seminar is to prepare students specifically for the requirements of the professional world, in which employers are increasingly demanding specialist knowledge and practical experience in project management.
Under the direction of Dr. Hilke Teubert, who is part of the Paderborn working group for sports didactics and pedagogy, the students develop project ideas and implement them in close cooperation with regional partners. The cooperation partners include the Paderborn City Sports Association e.V., the Paderborn District Sports Association e.V., the university sports department at the University of Paderborn and the SC Paderborn 07.
Practical projects and events
The practice-oriented projects that result from the seminar not only benefit the university's students, but also the regional sports landscape. At the end of April 2025, a trend sports day was organized for 80 children from the open all-day school at Sande Elementary School, where participants could try out various sports such as floorball, baseball, obstacle courses, ultimate frisbee and cornhole.
Another highlight is the workshop module “Team Building and Conflict Resolution”, which took place as part of the SC Paderborn 07’s “Zero Seven Education Zone” educational program. At an upcoming “Class Check” workshop on June 24th and 25th at the SC Paderborn 07 stadium, sixth grade students at Brakel Comprehensive School will be introduced to topics such as group dynamics and communication patterns in order to strengthen social skills and promote a positive classroom atmosphere.
On June 24th, a “3×3” basketball tournament will also take place at the University of Paderborn, organized by three students in collaboration with university sports and the Paderborn Baskets. 16 teams with up to 64 participants will take part, with a participation fee of ten euros per team being charged. Spectators are warmly invited to enjoy an attractive supporting program with further tournaments, DJ music, food trucks and hands-on stations. The highlight will be an opening game in which the Paderborn Baskets will compete against members of the university's executive committee.
Volunteering in sport
Another important date is the “Volunteer Cup” in the Ahorn Sports Park on June 28th. This event aims to recognize volunteer involvement in sport. Five sports students from Paderborn organized a day of action for around 80 young volunteers and sports helpers, which includes workshops for personal development and sporting challenges.
In parallel to these activities, the bachelor's degree program offers Sports management a variety of professional opportunities at various universities. Students learn knowledge of sports association management, sports marketing, sports event management, sports facility management and sports PR work.
Overall, it can be seen that the University of Paderborn and its partners make a decisive contribution to the training of specialists in the sports sector through practical projects and events. This commitment not only contributes to the personal development of the students, but also strengthens the regional sports landscape.
