Chemnitz elementary school opens groundbreaking UNI class for teachers!

On April 11, 2025, the first UNI class in Saxony was held in Chemnitz West Street Elementary School opened. This innovative classroom is equipped with the latest video and sound technology and allows lessons to be broadcast live into an observation room. This means that student teachers, lecturers and teachers can follow lessons from four different camera perspectives. The video recordings also offer the opportunity for later reflection on selected lesson excerpts.

The project is by Prof. Dr. Sarah Desirée Lange led by Chemnitz University of Technology, supported by Doreen Contassot, the headmistress of the Weststrasse primary school, as well as the State Office for Schools and Education (LaSuB) and the city of Chemnitz. The aim of the UNIClass is to strengthen teacher training through an intensive combination of theory and practice.

Including didactics and digital media

In the coming summer semester of 2025, the first seminars for teacher training students at Chemnitz University will take place in the UNI class. Here, students should learn how to design high-quality inclusive lessons and successfully convey information technology content. The focus is on the development of inclusive teaching and the child-friendly teaching of topics relating to artificial intelligence.

School principal Doreen Contassot highlights the benefits of collaborative reflection on videotaped lessons. This form of collaboration not only creates a powerful feedback culture, but also promotes exchange between students and experienced teachers. The project is part of a long-standing tradition of UNI classes that take place at the Chair of Primary School Education and Primary School Didactics Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich have been developed since 2010.

Teaching videos as a reflection tool

The UNI classes contribute to profile building in teacher training by testing theoretically based teaching concepts in practice. Video laboratories support the development, testing and evaluation of lessons, which leads to a special culture of reflection and feedback. In addition, the events in the UNI classes are accessible to primary school and special education teaching students.

The topic of inclusive didactics also has a scientific basis, like the article “Inclusive didactics in teacher training” by Miesera and Will. It emphasizes that the legally anchored inclusive training of teachers requires additional skills in order to do justice to the heterogeneity in the classroom. Teachers therefore need to be prepared for these challenges, and the use and reflection of teaching videos play a crucial role in the skills acquisition of future teachers.

Overall, the opening of the UNIKlasse not only represents progress in teacher training, but also a significant step towards inclusive and contemporary education in Saxony.
