Photo competition Lived Diversity”: Chemnitz talent honored!

On May 28, 2025, an impressive selection of photographs was honored as part of the Chemnitz University of Technology’s “Making Lived Diversity Visible” photo competition. The event, which is a collaboration between Chemnitz University of Technology, the city of Chemnitz and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH, honored the best representations of social, cultural, gender, sexual, religious and age-related diversity.

The jury, led by Prof. Dr. Anja Strobel awarded the first prize to Anna-Lena Richter from Meißen for her impressive photo “Special People”. The second prize went to Natalie Bleyl from Chemnitz for the work “Arrived”, followed by Wolfgang Thieme from Niederwiesa/Braunsdorf, who took third place with his photo “Waiting for Spring in Chemnitz”. Special prizes were also awarded to Claudia Dohle from Augustusburg for “Transformation” and Liliana Seidel from Lichtenberg for “Respect”.

Diversity and inclusion in focus

A total of 44 photos were submitted by 24 participants from different cities, including contributions from cities such as Bielefeld, Leipzig and Döbeln. The topics covered in the works reflect the comprehensive diversity of society. The best 14 photos were selected for an exhibition in the university library, which will be on view until June 30, 2025.

The award ceremony took place on May 27, 2025 and at the same time opened the exhibition in the foyer of the university library, which is open to visitors from Monday to Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Accompanying the exhibition is a book table on various diversity topics. This initiative is part of a broader movement to promote the visibility of marginalized groups who are often underrepresented in many areas, including media and marketing. A lecture by Shutterstock highlights the need to create authentic content that reflects the reality of diverse lifestyles and avoids stereotypes.

The competition “Making living diversity visible” was created from the “Diversity Audit” of the Stifterverband. The initiative is financially supported by the Society of Friends of the TU Chemnitz e. V., the printing company Willy Gröer GmbH & Co. KG and the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 gGmbH.

This commitment to diversity is evident not only in the work submitted, but also in the broader efforts to close the gap between the portrayal and reality of diversity in society. The competition results serve as an important step toward a more open and inclusive culture that values and respects all voices and perspectives.
