Innovative ideas for patents: Summer academy in Hoyerswerda ready to start!

The “International TUD|excite Summer School” is in the starting blocks: the event will take place in Hoyerswerda from August 25th to 29th, 2025. It is organized by the Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TUD|excite) at the Technical University of Dresden (TUD) and offers the opportunity to transform patents into new business ideas. Under the motto “Patents in Search of New Business” international participants have the chance to develop innovative solutions and present their concepts.

Around 30 young researchers from Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, England, Italy, France and India will take part in the summer school. The participants work in interdisciplinary teams and cooperate closely with regional players such as the Lausitz Technology Center (LAUTECH). They receive support from experts in the areas of innovation and startups as well as from regional entrepreneurs. A central goal of the event is to support participants in developing new impulses and start-up ideas for patents in fields such as life sciences, sensor technology and photophysics.

Cooperation and support

At the end of the summer school, participants have the opportunity to present their ideas to investors. This platform offers the opportunity to receive valuable feedback and attract potential investors. Convincing teams can further develop their concepts with TUD|excite and secure a place in the exciteLAB. There, startups enjoy six months of individual support as well as access to global companies and investors.

The event is part of the Zuse Innovators Program (Z-IP), which is supported by the Saxon State Ministry for Infrastructure and Regional Development (SMIL). This innovative approach is intended to help strengthen the quality of teaching and studying locally and to test new teaching and learning formats at universities. The summer school aims to train students and researchers in the development of innovative product ideas and business models.

Conditions of participation and application details

Master’s students, doctoral students and postdocs are eligible to participate. The retrospective events showed that in 2024 a quarter of the participants came from Poland, Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Participants can access a patent portfolio provided as well as use their own inventions. Even business administration students are encouraged to apply.

The costs for the summer school, with the exception of travel costs, are covered in full. The application deadline is May 31, 2025. If you have any questions, you can contact the excite team directly at franziska.greim@tu-dresden.de turn around.

In recent years, the Technical University of Dresden has made a significant contribution to promoting start-ups and strengthening higher education through innovative programs and initiatives. This is particularly clear through annual funding of 150 million euros to support university teaching since 2021. From 2024 onwards, cooperation with the federal states to finance these initiatives will be sought.
