Senior College Chemnitz: Knowledge journey for seniors begins in October!

The senior college at the Chemnitz University of Technology recently published the event program for the winter semester 2025/2026. The offerings are varied and are aimed specifically at seniors who are interested in various subject areas.

The program includes not only informative lectures, but also practical courses in the areas of language, smartphones and computers. Registration is required for all offerings, with the first series of lectures starting on October 17, 2025 at 1:45 p.m. The opening lecture will be given by the Chemnitz Police Department and Sparkasse Chemnitz and is entitled “Smarter against fraudsters – How you can protect your money”. The grandchild trick is particularly discussed here.

Diverse range of topics

The lecture series covers a number of other exciting topics. These include aspects of a healthy lifestyle, the exciting topic of China's espionage, the history of the Technical Relief Agency, the structural change in Lusatia as well as the history of the Fritz Heckert residential area and the garage campus of the cultural capital. The entire series of lectures can be attended for a participation fee of 40 euros.

In addition, seniors can take part in selected lectures at Chemnitz University of Technology without prior exams. The fee for participation in up to three lecture series is 30 euros. The language and technology courses are limited to a maximum of ten participants per course and cost 45 euros each.

In addition to the programs at Chemnitz University of Technology, there are also other educational offers for older people in the region, for example at Technical University of Dresden and the University of Leipzig. These further training opportunities are also open to seniors without a high school diploma, which makes it much easier for older people to participate in education.

In a current special issue from the Federal Association of Senior Citizens' Organizations (BAGSO), numerous projects and educational offers for older people are presented, which document the diversity and necessity of education in old age. Education is viewed here not only as an individual right, but also as an important aspect for social participation and the health of older people. The chairwoman of BAGSO, Dr. Regina Görner, highlights the importance of education as a human right and calls for a national education strategy that supports lifelong learning for all age groups.

In this context, the “Grandmas for Future” initiative, which was launched by Cordula Weimann, should also be mentioned. This initiative aims to raise awareness of the climate crisis and has already formed over 80 regional groups. Offers such as the future quiz are very well received and are held in numerous institutions.

In summary, it can be seen that Chemnitz University of Technology and other educational institutions provide a wide range of educational opportunities for older people that promote both knowledge and social interactions.
