Future of research: TU Chemnitz strengthens European networks in Paris!
On May 5, 2025, a major event on the future direction of European research took place at the Sorbonne University in Paris. Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl, Vice Rector for Teaching and International Affairs TU Chemnitz, represented the Across European University Alliance, in which Chemnitz University of Technology plays a central role as a founding member and lead.
The event was organized by Emmanuel Macron, the French President, and Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission. The focus of the discussion was the new research strategy “Choose Europe”, which aims to establish Europe as a leading science and business location.
Content of the new research strategy
In her speech, von der Leyen presented a comprehensive package to support excellent scientists, which includes a volume of 500 million euros for the years 2025 to 2027. The key points of the strategy include:
The workshop that followed the event brought together 64 funded European university alliances. This emphasized the strategic development of these alliances and the importance of international collaboration in research.
Marie Skłodowska-Curie measures
An essential part of the research strategy is: Marie Skłodowska-Curie measures, which aim to establish a strong pool of European researchers and make Europe more attractive as a research location. These measures include:
- Netzwerke zur Doktorandenausbildung.
- Forschungsaufenthalte von Postdocs.
- Personalaustauschprogramme.
- Mobilitätsprogramme.
The calls for proposals are open to different topics and rely on a bottom-up principle. A crucial criterion is the international mobility of researchers.
Horizon Europe: Europe's commitment to research and innovation
In the context of European research funding, the program is Horizon Europe of central importance. As the ninth framework program of the European Union, it has a budget of 95.5 billion euros and aims to strengthen Europe's competitiveness and promote cooperation between science and industry.
The program is divided into several pillars that address different aspects of research and innovation, including scientific excellence, thematic clusters and innovative approaches. The central topics include health, sustainable development and digitalization.
The steps initiated by Choose Europe and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions are part of a comprehensive plan to strengthen the European research scene and create a dynamic environment for future innovation. In view of these developments, it is clear that European research is on a solid path to successfully meet the challenges of the future.
