Flensburg in shock: Anti-Semitic poster causes outraged reactions

On September 22, 2025, an anti-Semitic poster was visible hanging in a window of a junk shop in Flensburg. This poster, which openly banned Jews from entering the home, triggered a wave of outrage. The Executive Board of the European University of Flensburg (EUF) strongly condemns the anti-Semitic sign and is “deeply shocked by the expression of hatred.” uni-flensburg.de reported.

The university community takes a clear stance against anti-Semitism, discrimination and hate speech. President Prof. Dr. Christiane Hipp emphasizes that anti-Semitism must have no place in society. The EUF stands in solidarity with the Jewish community and all people of Jewish faith in Flensburg. In addition to a clear commitment to diversity, respect and acceptance, the university announced that particular attention will be paid to content critical of discrimination and anti-Semitism in teacher training.

Reactions and expressions of solidarity

The Evangelical Church in Schleswig-Flensburg also commented on the incident. Provost Rebecca Lenz was shocked by the anti-Semitic statements and made clear the support for the Jewish community in Flensburg. As part of this solidarity, a memorial will be erected in front of Flensburg's St. Nikolai Church to commemorate 45 Jewish citizens from Flensburg who lost their lives during the Holocaust. The church district also supports appeals for donations for the Jewish community in order to collectively take a stand against anti-Semitism. Donations can be sent to IBAN DE 21 2175 0000 0186 0861 95, using the keyword “Memorial plaque for the Flensburg Holocaust victims” (more on this at kirchenkreis-schleswig-flensburg.de ).

The incident has also attracted the attention of politicians and anti-Semitism officials. Gerhard Ulrich, anti-Semitism commissioner, described the sign as a “disgusting, appalling sign” and complained about the sharp increase in anti-Semitic crimes in Schleswig-Holstein, where they have increased almost fivefold since 2023. Israeli opposition leader Jair Lapid has also announced that he will take action against the shop owner. He plans to take legal action and wants to sue the store owner “for every penny.” zeit.de reported.

The general public perceived the incident as an alarming example of increasing anti-Semitism in Germany. The German public prosecutor's office has already started investigations. It remains to be hoped that solidarity with the Jewish community in Flensburg sends a strong signal against increasing hatred and discrimination.
