Professionals in office: New elections at the University of Flensburg bring a breath of fresh air!

On April 9, 2025, significant personnel changes were made to Faculty I at the European University of Flensburg (EUF). Prof. Dr. Maike Busker was appointed dean and Prof. Dr. Birgit Peuker confirmed in office as dean of studies. Prof. Dr. Maike Busker holds a chair in chemistry and didactics, while Prof. Dr. Birgit Peuker is responsible for the professional discipline of nutrition and home economics as well as their didactics. This appointment follows the leadership of Prof. Dr. Nils Langer and Prof. Dr. Tanya Zybatow, who previously led the faculty, like uni-flensburg.de reported.

At Faculty II, where the restructuring took place on March 12, 2025, Prof. Dr. Karsten Mackensen as Dean and Prof. Dr. Hedwig Wagner elected as dean of studies. Prof. Dr. Mackensen brings his expertise to musicology, while Prof. Dr. Wagner focuses on European media studies. These two replace the previous deans, Prof. Dr. Tabea Scheel and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Budde.

Faculty III and its leadership

Faculty III of the EUF also experienced a change in leadership on March 12, 2025. Here, Prof. Dr. Florian Bruckmann as dean and Prof. Dr. Marcel Smolka elected as dean of studies. Prof. Dr. Bruckmann, who is responsible for Catholic theology, and Prof. Dr. Smolka, who deals with international and institutional economics, will take over the responsibility from Prof. Dr. Tabea Scheel and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Budde.

The aim of introducing a middle management level with three faculties at the EUF is to comprehensively strengthen the decentralized ability to act and make decisions. This is part of the university's ongoing efforts to position itself internationally and locally and to ensure a high quality of education.

The European University of Flensburg at a glance

The EUF was founded in 1946 as a university of education and gained university status in 1994. Around 5,992 students are currently studying at the institution, which is located in the Sandberg district of Flensburg, not far from the Danish border. The university employs around 675 people, including 83 professors. Its annual budget in 2022 was around 50 million euros, supplemented by 5.8 million euros in third-party funding, such as wikipedia.org holds on.

The European University of Flensburg is one of only two European universities in Germany and offers courses in teaching, educational sciences and interdisciplinary European studies. There are also special programs for the study preparation and integration of refugees, the ProRef program, which has been active since 2015.

These developments are part of a larger trend in Germany's higher education landscape, where institutions are increasingly engaging in international university collaborations. The establishment of transnational educational institutions is viewed as an essential part of internationalization strategies. The university has partnerships with over 120 universities in 35 countries, which underlines the university's intercultural sensitivity and quality awareness in a global educational competition international-hochschulkooperationen.de carried out exactly.
