Bauhaus4EU: New alliance for sustainable development starts in Weimar!

On March 12, 2025, the European university alliance “BAUHAUS4EU” was officially launched at the Bauhaus University Weimar. University President Prof. Peter Benz In his opening speech, he emphasized the importance of intercultural competence and specialist knowledge in the area of sustainability. Awareness of regional peculiarities must also be promoted. The aim of the alliance is to present studying at BAUHAUS4EU as attractive and “cool”.

The implementation phase for this ambitious project is now beginning and is intended to drive innovation in the education sector. The kick-off brought together more than a hundred participants, including representatives from ten European universities and regional partners. Dr. Tonia Schmitz coordinates the alliance at the Bauhaus University.

Interdisciplinary collaboration

The alliance brings together universities from different countries to establish innovative teaching and learning formats. The plan is to set up a “BAUHAUS4EU Digital Campus” that will integrate joint education and research programs. Thuringia's Minister for Education, Science and Culture, Christian Tischner, emphasized in this context that the promotion of European identity and Thuringia's role as an innovation driver for sustainable development are important aspects of the initiative.

A total of eleven working groups are working on various focal points. These interdisciplinary curricula focus on the topics of sustainability, digitalization and innovation. The aim is to optimally prepare students for the challenges of the job market. Over 124,000 students and 10,000 employees will benefit from this initiative.

Financial support and outlook

The alliance will receive 14.4 million euros from EU funds in the current funding period. There is also the possibility of national co-financing via the German Academic Exchange Service (DAD). The state of Thuringia not only supports the Bauhaus University Weimar financially, but also through networking initiatives with the EU.

The participating universities include:

  • Blekinge Institute of Technology (Schweden)
  • Polis University (Albanien)
  • Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (Portugal)
  • University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy (Bulgarien)
  • University of Bergamo (Italien)
  • University of Economics in Katowice (Polen)
  • Université Lumière Lyon 2 (Frankreich)
  • University of Macedonia (Griechenland)
  • Université de Picardie Jules Verne (Frankreich)

In the long term, the alliance aims to work closely together in the areas of research and teaching in order to shape future European issues sustainably and to shape the higher education landscape in Europe. During the kick-off event, high-quality networking opportunities were also offered for those involved in the project.

To give a visual impression of the day, there is a photo gallery with the best moments from the event. The commitment to a Europe-wide study culture and the exchange between universities will therefore be further strengthened in the coming years.
