Energy transition: This is how communities benefit from renewable energies!

On June 10, 2025, experts and interested parties gathered in Rudolstadt to take part in the “STREIT & CONFIDENCE” event. Prof. Jens Wolling presented the results of interdisciplinary research projects on energy supply. The focus of the discussion was the central question: “Can renewable energies save the regional economy?” This event was organized by the ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS and Holtzbrinck Berlin with the aim of presenting the results of the research projects to a broader public.

In his speech, Prof. Wolling emphasized the necessity and feasibility of the energy transition. Feedback from participants showed that such conversations were found to be meaningful and encouraging. The WissKomm Energiewende project, which has been active since 2022, was recently extended by two years until 2025. In addition, the updated exhibition on the project will be on display in Nuremberg until November 2025 and then in other cities.

Regional value creation through renewable energies

The energy transition brings significant development prospects, particularly for rural and structurally weak regions. The expansion of wind turbines and photovoltaic systems can generate additional income for municipal coffers. This income is crucial for necessary investments in public services and infrastructure. Strengthening civil society also plays a central role. The Berlin Institute highlights that residents can benefit from reduced electricity prices and better offers if they are directly involved in energy systems through energy cooperatives.

However, not all regions can utilize the potential of the energy transition equally. Comprehensive participation by municipalities and the population is crucial for the acceptance of the planned projects. As part of a study, the possibilities and potential of regional value creation and participation are to be determined in a systematized and regionally differentiated manner.

Social acceptance as the key

Active support from society is essential for the success of the energy transition. Municipalities in particular play a central role in the implementation of renewable energy projects. The Heinrich Böll Foundation emphasizes that social acceptance is a central issue. Conflicts often arise in connection with local energy projects, which is why participation opportunities for municipalities and citizens are crucial.

Ten insights were gained from the “ReWA” project that are necessary for the success of participation and acceptance. This includes, among other things, targeted communication, the use of participation windows in planning and approval processes and the promotion of community energy projects. The report points out that acceptance can be significantly increased through transparent communication and participation.

Supporting municipalities in their role as designers is particularly important. The expansion of wind energy and other renewable sources can not only lead to higher utilization of the network infrastructure, but also ensure that the added value remains local.

Recent presentations and discussions on these topics make it clear that social participation and support is crucial for the future of the energy transition. Only through cooperation and understanding among the population can the challenges be overcome effectively.
