Successful students: Award funding prizes for innovative theses!

The coveted sponsorship award for outstanding achievements in mechanical engineering was awarded during a ceremony on June 6, 2025. The prize went, among others, to Haoze Wang, who wrote his master's thesis in the field of product and system development at the Qingdao University of Science and Technology (QUST) was awarded in China. His topic covered important design principles and was recognized by university peers who attended the awards ceremony.

In addition to Wang, Jiekai Wang was also recognized for his award-winning thesis. He worked at the TU Ilmenau on the miniaturization of a confocal microscope. This shows the close connection between innovative research and education at QUST, which was founded in Qingdao in 1950 and has developed from a specialized college to a comprehensive multidisciplinary university.

The prize winners and their work

A total of nine students were awarded the sponsorship award this year, which illustrates the diversity of projects and disciplines.

  • M.Sc. Marina Bücker
  • M.Sc. Maria Alejandra Guzman Alfaro
  • M.Sc. Carlos Gianpaul Rincon-Ruiz
  • M.Sc. Haoze Wang
  • M.Sc. Lukas Weyh
  • M.Sc. Jiekai Wang
  • B.Sc. Jens Lang
  • Dipl.-Ing. Marvin Henkel
  • Dipl.-Ing. Jasmin Ruprecht

Jens Lang, mechatronics student, dealt with the calibration of high-precision inclinometers in cooperation with SIOS Meßtechnik GmbH in his bachelor's thesis. Marvin Henkel, another mechanical engineering student, developed and characterized a structure for alkylsilanized monolayers, which was realized in collaboration with 5microns GmbH.

The certificates were presented by Prof. Thomas Fröhlich, chairman of the support association. This is further evidence of how academic achievements are recognized in research and development and provide the opportunity to develop new technologies.

About Qingdao University of Science and Technology

The Qingdao University of Science and Technology is located in the port city of Qingdao and can look back on a long history. Today the university offers a variety of degree programs in areas such as science, technology, humanities and management. With around 30,000 students and over 1,600 academic staff, it is one of the leading educational institutions in the region.

The university has continued to develop, starting as Shenyang Light Industry Vocational School in 1950. Over the decades it has undergone several renames, finally gaining full university status in 2002.
