Spring reception at the Bauhaus University: New employees warmly welcome!

On April 23, 2025, the Presidium of the Bauhaus University Weimar for a spring reception. The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Bauhaus Design Laboratory at Zwilling-Scholl-Straße 13. The aim of the reception is to welcome new employees, with the organizers ensuring that drinks are provided. Feedback on participation is requested via a link provided. The reception will be supported by Prof. Peter Benz, member of the Executive Board, which underlines the importance of the event.

The Bauhaus University Weimar has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. It was founded in 1860 by Grand Duke Carl Alexander of Saxony as an art school and was given the status of the Grand Ducal Saxon Academy of Fine Arts in 1910. In 1919, the Bauhaus was founded under the direction of Walter Gropius, who united the Academy of Fine Arts and the former art school. This was a result of the socio-political upheaval after the fall of the Empire and a central moment of the Weimar Republic.

The development of the university

Today's Bauhaus University Weimar was founded in 1996 as a specialized university for creative areas. It includes four faculties: Architecture, Civil Engineering, Design and Media. These faculties promote innovative projects through interdisciplinary collaboration and close ties to industry. With around 4,000 students, the university offers a variety of courses as well as individual support.

Another important aspect of the university is its modern infrastructure. The library, which opened in 2005, offers over 450,000 items and supports students in their academic and creative work. The university also promotes the early integration of students into research projects in order to acquire important skills for their professional future. Commitment to the Bologna Process also improves students’ career opportunities.

Meaning of the Bauhaus

Walter Gropius' vision of the Bauhaus was to use industrialization to optimize the production of everyday goods and architecture. He had previously developed a corresponding program and brought extensive experience in industrial and mass production construction. The innovative teaching at the Bauhaus was influenced by renowned artists such as Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky, who revolutionized art in the 20th century.

The first years of the Bauhaus were marked by challenges. The conflicts between new generations of artists and traditionally oriented professors led to increased rejection of the Bauhaus by the crafts in the 1920s. Despite these difficulties, the Bauhaus remained an important foundation for the development of modern art and design. It reflected not only the social changes, but also the political tensions of the time, particularly with the emergence of right-wing and ethnic parties in Thuringia.
