Discover innovative visions of the future at summaery2025 in Weimar!

From July 10th to 13th, 2025, the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Bauhaus University Weimar will present over 35 student projects as part of the summaery2025 event. This event focuses on the topics of sustainability as well as social and ecological requirements for living spaces. The students demonstrate innovative approaches to resource-saving work that are locally rooted and address the urgent need to find architectural solutions that meet the challenges of climate change.

An outstanding project is “Kosmos Hohe Pappeln”, which involves the transformation of a former home of Henry van de Velde. This creates structural additions and design visions that pursue the concept of a “growing house”. Special attention will be given to this project at the opening on Friday, July 11th at 5 p.m. More }
Projects include “Bauhäuser”, an art historical architectural guide about the Bauhaus University and the creation of novel designs for Weimar’s Berkaer Bahnhof under the title “Routines”. Further initiatives, such as the redesign of the “Erfurter Angers” and the transformation of a historic ox stable on a 1:1 scale under the “Versuchsgut Dornburg” project, are also on the agenda.

Sustainable approaches in architecture and urban development

The importance of sustainability is becoming increasingly relevant in architecture and urban development, as on sustainability-economics.de is highlighted. Climate change, urbanization and the scarcity of resources require a rethinking of the approach to construction projects. Cities are growing rapidly, intensifying the need for housing, infrastructure and energy. At the same time, the ecological footprint that needs to be reduced is increasing.

The strategy of sustainable architecture includes a three-pillar model that integrates ecological, economic and social aspects. This means using environmentally friendly materials, minimizing energy consumption and promoting quality of life for residents. Innovative approaches such as biophilic architecture and intelligent materials offer new solutions for creating sustainable living spaces that are both ecologically and economically viable.

Challenges and opportunities of urban development

The challenges of urban development are complex and threaten the quality of urban life. Loud bpb.de Over 50% of the world's population now lives in cities, in Germany it is even 75%. United Nations projections suggest that up to 70% of people will live in urban areas by 2050. This leads to an increased need for access to income, housing, education, health and mobility.

Cities are challenged to meet these needs while addressing the challenges of climate change, social inequality and resource scarcity. Interdisciplinary training for experts in sustainable urban development is becoming increasingly important. Collaborations between social scientists, engineers and economists are necessary to find socially acceptable and innovative solutions that benefit both current and future generations.

The students at the Bauhaus University Weimar play a crucial role. Their projects, which are being implemented in cities such as Leipzig, Zwickau, Chemnitz, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Brussels and Paris, show how creativity and science can come together to meet the pressing challenges of sustainable urban development. Using new materials such as clay, wood and straw as well as reusing existing structures, they are developing concepts that will have a significant impact on the future quality of life in urban areas.

summaery2025 is therefore not only a platform for student creativity, but also an important step towards a more sustainable and livable urban future.
