Career prospects for architects

Architects play a central role in construction planning and supervision. Your range of tasks includes not only the design and planning of new buildings and extensions, but also responsibility for renovation, modernization and maintenance measures on buildings. They work in different areas, be it in architectural offices, public offices or freelance.

An architect must therefore take various aspects such as health and fire protection, energy efficiency and sustainable building into account. Your activities also include estimating construction costs and creating 3D models of construction planning. In close contact with clients, they are active throughout all phases of the project, from submitting building applications to monitoring warranty work.

Market development and challenges

The demand for architects has grown in recent years, particularly in the technical-constructive area and in construction management. The economic situation is favored by low interest rates and a high demand for new housing. The job market for architects and civil engineers is closely linked to the construction industry and shows positive trends. Employment and demand for skilled workers is currently at an all-time high.

Unemployment among architects is low and falling, with the lowest rate in a decade recorded in 2017. In Germany, there are currently 111,242 (building) architects registered in chamber lists, which corresponds to an increase of 0.88% compared to the previous year. There is also a remarkable ratio of building architects to residents: around 1.25 per 1,000 residents.

A relevant demographic problem is the aging of architects. About a third of structural architects are over 55 years old and will retire in the near future. While more than 50,000 students studied architecture or related disciplines in the 2016/2017 winter semester, this 20% increase over the last ten years shows a growing potential for skilled workers. It is recommended that architects also consider related disciplines and interdisciplinary courses.

Overall, the job market for architects is very dynamic, but uncertainties also lead to a varying forecast. When choosing a course of study, interest and skills should always be the focus in order to be successful in this complex and challenging industry.
