Art meets science: New competition for Berlin campuses!
A competition for the artistic design of a new science building was held in Berlin-Dahlem, which is intended to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in the area of biodiversity. The building will offer offices, laboratories and communication areas that will support exchange between researchers from different disciplines. Participants were invited to submit concepts that take both architecture and outdoor space into account and strengthen the dialogue between art and science. uni-weimar.de reports that the award-winning design by Ursula Damm is entitled “A biological clock – rhythm of life”.
Damm’s innovative installation visualizes the life rhythms of water flea (Daphnia) and tussock mosquito (Chaoborus). These two species have a close predator-prey relationship and their activities are represented in a novel graphical concept. The rhythmic structures that Damm developed show the phases of activity, migration and developmental steps of these animals. The annual cycle becomes visible as you walk through the room and fits harmoniously into the architecture of the planned building. The installation is complemented by monitor work on the ground floor, which shows the behavior of the animals in their natural habitat.
Points of contact between art and science
The competition aims to bring together art and science to create greater visibility and appreciation of biodiversity. This is also supported by other initiatives, such as a workshop on macro photography that recently took place at the Free University of Berlin. This workshop is aimed at students and aims to make insect-based habitats visible on campus. udk-berlin.de informs that many important species for ecosystems are often overlooked and underappreciated, while a high proportion of endangered species are found in less charismatic groups.
The workshop, which has a limited number of participants of ten people, will receive input from experts such as Prof. Dr. Jonathan Jeschke offer. Participants can create their photographic work and present it in an exhibition entitled “Multispecies Campus”. Several dates are planned, including internships to experiment with various photography techniques that promote the visibility of the smallest creatures. The prerequisite for participation is basic knowledge of photography and bringing your own photo equipment.
Important dates

These interdisciplinary approaches, combined with creative designs such as Ursula Damm's design, can make a decisive contribution to highlighting and appreciating the importance of biodiversity in society. Through such initiatives, the dialogue between art and science is not only encouraged, but actively promoted.
