Student numbers at TU Ilmenau are increasing rapidly – a path to success!
The Technical University of Ilmenau is recording a remarkable increase in student numbers. The matriculation ceremony will take place on October 11, 2025, celebrating the growth of almost nine percent compared to the previous year. To date, 603 new students have enrolled in one of the 49 courses offered, with a particularly significant increase of over 25 percent in the master's courses. This positive development continues after an increase of eleven percent was already observed last year. Enrollments are still possible until October 31, 2025, and the final enrollment statistics will be published in early November tu-ilmenau.de reported.
What is particularly noticeable is that the number of new students in MINT subjects is falling nationwide. Nevertheless, the TU Ilmenau manages to counteract this trend. Over 60 percent of new students have foreign citizenship, and more than half did not acquire their university entrance qualification in Germany. This illustrates the international orientation of the university campus, which brings together students from over 100 nationalities. This diversity will be underlined by the upcoming celebrations, which will include musical openings, welcome speeches, the planting of the “Matriculation Tree” as well as ceremonial speeches and greetings. There is also the teaching award ceremony, which recognizes the achievements of the teachers.
Similar trends in Germany
Overall, the number of foreign students has achieved remarkable growth in recent years. Compared to German first-year students, the number of foreign first-time students rose by an impressive 33 percent, while at the same time the number of German students fell by 13 percent. The TU Ilmenau is therefore not only a local success factor, but also part of a larger national trend that is increasingly internationalizing the university landscape in Germany.
Prof. Anja Geigenmüller, Vice President for Studies and Teaching, is available for further information. The TU Ilmenau continues to rely on an appealing and international study environment that attracts and promotes many new talents.
