University of Vechta sets new standards with 750,000 euros in EU funding!

The University of Vechta has positioned itself as a leader in international mobility by receiving over 750,000 euros from the Erasmus+ program for collaboration with partner countries outside Europe. This good news was published on August 21, 2025 and shows the outstanding status that the university has in Lower Saxony and nationwide.

In the current ranking, the university takes first place in Lower Saxony and seventh place among German universities, which underlines its committed work in international exchange. Prof. Dr. Christopher Osterhaus, the university's vice president for research, emphasizes the importance of international collaboration, which is crucial for research and teaching.

Expansion of international cooperation

With a focus on intercultural skills, Dr. Natalia Petrillo, head of the International Office, emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation to countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The new partner countries include Burundi, Kenya and Uganda. These strategic partnerships are intended not only to increase the attractiveness for scientists and students from home and abroad, but also to promote academic exchange.

The existing list of collaborations already includes countries such as Ethiopia, Albania, Kosovo, Georgia, Ukraine, Lebanon, Morocco, Tanzania, Canada and the USA, demonstrating the versatility and reach of the University of Vechta's programs.

Erasmus+ program and its goals

The Erasmus+ program, which brings together EU programs for lifelong learning, youth, sport and university cooperation, offers a variety of opportunities. With a total budget of around 26.2 billion euros for the period 2021-2027, which is almost twice as high as the previous program, priorities such as social inclusion, green and digital change as well as promoting the participation of young people in democratic life are set. Further information on these topics is available on the European Commission website available.

The Erasmus+ program is divided into three key actions: mobility in higher education, cooperation projects and policy support. The criteria for applications are clearly defined and are aimed at students in short courses, bachelor's and master's students as well as doctoral students.

Financial support and additional resources

Participating universities can apply for financial aid to cover the costs of travel and stays. The exact amount of the scholarship depends, among other things, on the cost of living and the distance between the countries. Additionally, tuition and facility access fees are waived, while small insurance or membership costs may apply. Interested students should 321’s Erasmus+ website consult to find out what options are available to you.

Additional financial support for interns or students with fewer opportunities is also provided, as is online language support through Erasmus+. For the stay abroad, learning agreements must also be made between the universities that ensure the recognition of study achievements.

The University of Vechta has thus established itself as a future-oriented and cooperative partner in the international higher education sector and would like to thank you for the opportunity to further promote intercultural understanding and academic exchange.
