Future of memory: memorials rethought in the digital age!

Since April 2025, the University of Vechta has been devoting itself to the topic of “Remembrance and historical awareness. New challenges for memorial work” as part of an exciting lecture series. The series of events, organized by Prof. Dr. Eugen Kotte and Hannah Sandstede, aims to raise awareness of the history of National Socialism and promote engagement with the past. The conclusion of the lecture series is planned for July 2025, which offers the opportunity to shed light on the various perspectives and challenges in memorial work mynewsdesk.com reports.

The first lectures in the series dealt with fundamental discussions on memory and historical awareness. In further sessions, aspects such as landscaping, exhibition concepts and memorial educational programs were discussed. The focus was particularly on modern developments, including the integration of social media and inclusion offers. The importance of “historical awareness” as a central concept was discussed in detail by Kotte and discussed in connection with visits to memorial sites.

Insights into future lectures

A highlight of the lecture series will take place on July 3, 2025, when Hannah Sandstede will speak about the role of digital media in memorial work. Her lecture entitled “Memorials in the Digital Age – How Serious Games Can Open Up New Ways of Commemoration” aims to present innovative approaches to engaging with history. The use of serious games is discussed, in particular the game “Traces on Paper”, which deals with psychiatric crimes during National Socialism. Without a doubt, the discussion about emotionalization and participation when using such formats is a central theme of the event.

On July 10th the last lecture by Dr. Katja Drews and Kyra Börnemeier will take place, which will deal with the topic of cultural democracy education and its influence on memorial education. An innovative approach to memorial work is presented that focuses on social participation and the importance of attitude and communication.
