Celebration of the 200th anniversary of teacher training in Schwäbisch Gmünd!

On May 7, 2025, the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education celebrated the existence of its teacher training since 1825 with an impressive ceremony in the Congress Center Stadtgarten. Around 400 guests, including five former rectors and one female rector, were present to recognize this important milestone. The development of the educational location as well as the importance of schools and teaching were discussed at the celebration. PH Schwäbisch Gmünd reports.

A central element of the celebration was the introduction of a new corporate design and the presentation of a new image film, which was created by an internal team of employees. Ministerial Director Dr. Hans J. Reiter and Prof. Dr. Lutz Kasper, the managing director of the newly founded Gmünd Ulm School of Education (GUSE), gave greetings in which they underlined the innovative orientation of teacher training.

Gmünd Ulm School of Education

The GUSE was created to intensify the collaboration between the University of Ulm and the Schwäbisch Gmünd University of Education. This initiative aims to improve the training of prospective teachers by combining the university's subject-specific expertise with the PH's didactic expertise. When the cooperation agreement was signed on February 19, 2025, signed by University President Professor Michael Weber and Rector Professor Kim-Patrick Sabla-Dimitrov, the foundation for this collaboration was laid and the vision of practical teacher training was formulated. A key goal of GUSE is to pragmatically address challenges such as the shortage of skilled workers and heterogeneity in classrooms. Prof. Dr. Lutz Kasper emphasized the need to view studies, traineeships and further training as a common concept. In addition, GUSE offers teacher training students a variety of development opportunities in the field of MINT (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology) through personal support and innovative teaching concepts.

New educational approaches and partnerships

As part of a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Dr. Sonja Schaal, perspectives in teacher development were discussed. It was agreed on the urgency of developing new learning concepts, which led to the founding of the “Schwäbisch Gmünd School of the Future Alliance”. The alliance partners include the city, the district, the Center for School Quality and Teacher Training, as well as other important educational institutions. GUSE is also planning to hold a summer school between Ulm and Schwäbisch Gmünd that will prepare relevant research content. These measures are intended to attract more students to study teaching in MINT subjects, which is seen as crucial for the future educational landscape in Germany.

The founding of the Gmünd Ulm School of Education and the celebration of the 200th anniversary of teacher training are not only significant historical events, but also mark a clear step into the future of teacher training in order to meet the changing demands in education.
