Open day in veterinary medicine: insight into exciting careers!

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the Free University of Berlin invites you to an exciting open day. From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., visitors to the Düppel campus in Berlin-Zehlendorf can gain deeper insights into veterinary training, research and practice. This event is aimed at all age groups and is suitable for families as well as those interested in the subject Free University of Berlin reports.

The day offers a program that is suitable for both large and small guests. Children in particular can take part in an interactive rally with over 20 stations. Here you can expect stations that include various research institutes, the clinic for small and pet animals and a stand of “Veterinarians Without Borders”. Successful participants in the rally can look forward to an “Animal Diploma” and can also visit the cuddly animal hospital and the petting zoo.

Diverse offers and insights

The program includes informative tours during which scientists from the department give short lectures. Practical insights are offered by, among others, a falconer, a master beekeeper and a farrier, who expand the knowledge of veterinary practices. In addition, the study office as well as trainees and the Berlin Veterinary Association are available to provide comprehensive information about study options and career prospects in veterinary medicine.

The physical well-being of the guests is ensured by students and employees who offer homemade cakes and barbecues. The department of veterinary medicine has its roots back to 1790 and is now one of the five veterinary training centers in Germany with more than 1,500 students.

Study structure and career prospects

The study of veterinary medicine in Germany is extensive and regulated. It is a course of study lasting a total of 5 years and 6 months, which is divided into four and a half years of scientific-theoretical parts and 1,170 hours of practical part. The LMU Munich adds that the course is also offered at other universities such as Giessen, Leipzig and Hanover. The admission process includes scientific examinations and practical training periods, which must be completed during the lecture-free period.

The course content covers interdisciplinary aspects, including anatomy, physiology and animal breeding. In addition, several tests are carried out in different formats. After successfully completing their studies, graduates must submit an application for approval to the responsible state authority.

Veterinarians find a variety of fields of activity and careers, including the treatment of sick animals, obstetrics, disease control and scientific research. Before entering the profession, foreign language skills are also required, e.g. B. Knowledge of Latin required.

The open day at the Düppel campus is an excellent opportunity to find out more about the opportunities in the field of veterinary medicine and to gain professional insights into everyday student life.
