Cross-border public services: results presented at Viadrina!
On June 10, 2025, scientists from the Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION and the University of Potsdam will announce a major event that will explore the cross-border organization of public services such as fire protection, emergency services and local transport. The results of these studies will be presented on Wednesday, June 25th at 4:15 p.m. at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). This event will take place in the Senate Hall (Room 109) of the Viadrina main building, at Große Scharrnstrasse 59, and will also be accessible online.
The editors and contributing authors, including Dr. Norbert Cyrus, Dr. Peter Ulrich, Dr. Sabine Zillmer and Dr. Marcin Krzymuski, play an essential role in presenting the research results. The anthology entitled “Cross-Border Services of General Interest” offers a detailed overview of the current status and prospects of cross-border services of general interest in European interconnected areas. Loud europa-uni.de National public services are often not sufficient because the intensive cross-border connections require a new approach.
Interdisciplinary research approach
The Viadrina Center B/ORDERS IN MOTION is known for its research into the complex relationships between borders and orders. The term “B/ORDERS” captures the central insight that borders and orders are not understood as fixed, natural barriers, but rather as the results of social practices and meaning creations that are in constant change. These dynamic concepts are not only territorial, but also include social and temporal aspects, and thus address the diverse dimensions of migration that are defined by multiple border setting and border crossings.
The Viadrina Center's approaches are multidimensional and interdisciplinary, meaning that they combine different scientific perspectives to comprehensively analyze the dynamics of boundary and order configurations. In the changing European landscape, such an interdisciplinary approach is crucial to meet the challenges of an increasingly connected society.
Perspectives on public services
The anthology, which will be published by Springer VS in 2025, was edited by Peter Ulrich, Norbert Cyrus and Jarosław Jańczak. The work published therein is intended to contribute to developing a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of cross-border services of general interest. Particularly in view of the increasing interconnectedness of European countries, it is important that national public service organizations pursue expanded and improved cooperation strategies in order to meet the needs of citizens.
