Innovations in health education: MHB team active at iSLS 2025!

The International SkillsLab Symposium (iSLS) took place from March 19 to 21, 2025 at the Technical University of Munich. Twelve members of the SkillsLab team from the Brandenburg Theodor Fontane Medical School (MHB) took part in this important event. The symposium provided a valuable platform for the exchange of ideas and methods in medical education.

The MHB team members actively designed various program items. Tutor Michelle led a workshop on “emotion regulation in the context of healthcare.” Patrick and Nora Schiller, who is in charge of the Skills Lab, gave a lecture on user analysis of the Skills Lab. They discussed the relevance of practical teaching formats for exam preparation and discussed feedback and opportunities for improvement. Jannis Schwanemann, medical director of the SkillsLab, presented a poster on the implementation of the “Emergency Day” teaching format.

Innovative concepts and networking opportunities

Participation in workshops and specialist lectures provided the team members with valuable inspiration for their own teaching practice. During a visit to the SkillsLab at the Technical University of Munich, they had the opportunity to get to know innovative concepts and teaching methods. Team members tried out various simulators and models that demonstrated new approaches to practical training.

The symposium was not only a learning platform, but also a place for networking. Contacts were made with other SkillsLabs in German-speaking countries, and collaborations in the areas of simulation training and tutor training were discussed in detail. The social evening in the Augustiner Brauhaus offered additional space for discussions and exchange among the participants.

Nora Schiller summarized participation in iSLS 2025 by emphasizing that the experience will contribute to improving practical training at the MHB. Impulses from the symposium should be integrated into teaching in order to further expand collaboration with other SkillsLabs.

The context of digitalization in healthcare

In the context of medical training, digitalization is playing an increasingly important role. From 2025, everyone with statutory health insurance will receive an electronic patient file (ePA), unless they object healthy.bund.de reports. Some private health insurance companies also offer such a file. Health apps that support treatment are already available with a prescription.

Telemedicine solutions can replace doctor's visits, which underlines the need for training formats like the SkillsLab. The telematics infrastructure enables the secure exchange of information between practices, hospitals, pharmacies and other facilities. Technologies to protect patient data are used to ensure that everyone involved in the healthcare system is connected. This means that the necessary information is directly available, which ensures future-oriented treatment for patients.

In general, it can be seen that events like the iSLS not only promote practical training in the healthcare sector, but also promote interdisciplinary exchange and the implementation of the latest technologies in order to continuously improve medical care.
