Science up close: Long Night of Discoveries in Berlin beckons!

The European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) is opening its doors to a series of interesting events that will take place in the coming days. On June 28th, from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the university will be part of the **Long Night of Science** in Berlin. This event takes place annually and is organized by the Long Night of Sciences Association. V., which brings together numerous scientific institutions in the region. Venues include the main buildings of the Humboldt University, where Viadrina will present various topics such as the German commitment to peace, the Ukrainian protest, digital entrepreneurship and computer games. Entry costs 5 euros, tickets are available online or at the box office.

In addition to the long night, the university offers several other events. On June 30th at 6:00 p.m. Prof. Dr. Jeffrey C. Alexander gave a lecture on “Civility and Peace Beyond the Nation State”. The event entitled "Can Civil Peace extend beyond the Nation State? Europe, NATO, and the U.S. in the Shadow of the Russia-Ukraine War" will take place in the main building, Room 109 (Senate Hall).

Variety of events

Two exciting events are planned for July 1st. At 4:00 p.m. Ulyana Wolf will lead a reading and workshop on multilingualism and literature in Auditorium Maximum, Room 202. Those interested can take part without prior registration. Immediately afterwards at 6:15 p.m. there will be a research colloquium at which Selim Pekel will give a lecture on Nietzsche's concept of ressentiment.

Another workshop entitled “What moves us – East, West and We in Frankfurt (Oder)” will take place on July 2nd from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. PD Dr. Carolin Leutloff-Grandits and Judith Althaus are the organizers and registration is required by email. Afterwards, at 6:15 p.m., Prof. Dr. Pierre Wat gave a lecture on art in the Anthropocene entitled "Paradise Lost? Art facing the Anthropocene".

Exhibitions and cultural offerings

The university also presents several thought-provoking exhibitions. One of them is "Mod-Block-DDR. Modernization Blockades in the Economy and Science of the GDR", which will be on display in the main building in front of the library until the end of August 2025. Another exhibition entitled “Where is this East Germany actually located?” can be viewed until August 2nd in the Friedenskirche, Schulstraße 4 A, 15230 Frankfurt (Oder).

The Viadrina Municipal Museum is showing the exhibition “Some Were Neighbors,” which is dedicated to the Holocaust and the role of ordinary people and is open to the public until the end of the year. Admission to this exhibition is free and takes place at Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Straße 11, 15230 Frankfurt (Oder).

The event and the associated programs not only demonstrate the scientific creativity of the European University Viadrina, but also promote dialogue between science and the public. In this context, the commitment of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research particularly worth mentioning, which is committed to the training of tomorrow's talent.
