International students present innovative ideas in Warsaw!
The XLII took place from June 16th to 18th, 2025. International student seminar took place at the Military Technical University of the Polish Army in Warsaw. Students from various NATO partner countries took part in this event. The representatives from Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg included Lieutenant Olivia Snichotta and Lieutenant Thies Jebe. Both are enrolled in the master's program in energy and environmental technology and presented the results of their bachelor's theses to a jury made up of professors and researchers from the Military Technical University.
The diversity of topics in the works presented promoted exciting discussions and intensive professional exchange among the participants. In addition to the German students, relatives from Slovakia, Hungary and Romania as well as representatives of the Polish Naval Academy in Gdansk were also present. This international collaboration highlights the growing relevance of environmental engineering courses in the academic sector.
Course offerings and support for students
At the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, the Master's program in Energy and Environmental Engineering is an integral part of the Faculty of Mechanical and Civil Engineering. In order to enable students to have a successful start to their studies, various programs are offered. This includes student tutorials, buddy and mentor programs as well as coaching offers.
The Center for Teaching and Learning (ZLL) focuses on improving students' soft skills and provides them with language courses as well as method and media workshops. In the first year of study, students acquire basic knowledge of natural sciences and engineering, including mathematics, biology and chemistry.
Course of study and practical experience
The students' course of study is clearly structured. In the second year, they gain in-depth knowledge of environmental law and practical topics such as water treatment technologies and circular economy. In the fourth semester, they also learn the basics of management and business administration. The third year of study enables students to complete a year-round study abroad or to attend an English-language course at Bremen University of Applied Sciences.
A significant part of the course is the internship lasting several weeks in the professional field, which is completed in the seventh semester. Here, students can put their theoretical knowledge into practice and gain valuable experience. In addition, the faculty annually awards outstanding theses with the Peter Wefing Prize to recognize excellent achievements.
Overall, the international student seminar not only shows the expertise of the Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg in the field of energy and environmental technology, but also the important role that international cooperation plays in academic education. The encounters and exchanges with international students not only strengthen specialist knowledge, but also promote a global network of specialists.
