Sustainability in focus: exhibition on repair & upcycling in Göttingen!

From July 16 to 20, 2025, a student exhibition entitled “Repair, Reuse, Recycle” will take place at the Forum Wissen in Göttingen. This event is designed to mark the tenth anniversary of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The aim of the exhibition is to address strategies for reusing, repairing and recycling everyday objects. The background to this initiative is the urgent need to rethink resource use in industrialized countries and reduce growing waste. The waste often arises from the way of life in wealthy nations, which consume large amounts of raw materials, while economic growth in developing and emerging countries increasingly unfolds in the same way. The scope of this problem is illustrated by bmbf.de clarified again.

Among the exhibits in the exhibition will be antique ceramics with traces of restoration, repurposed measuring instruments used in laboratory sciences, and converted parchment papers. Examples from the global south and objects made from ivory are also presented. The opening of the exhibition will take place on July 16, 2025 at 4 p.m. and all interested parties are warmly invited to attend.

Additional events and workshops

Parallel to the exhibition there will be a swap meet, guided tours and upcycling workshops. For the upcycling workshops, donations in the form of clothing, fabric scraps, darning cotton and buttons will be collected at the Forum Wissen information desk until July 17, 2025. This not only promotes recycling, but also raises awareness of the importance of resource conservation and the circular economy, which includes a strategy to extend the useful life of products and resources.

Establishing a circular economy is seen as an important approach. It aims to make products usable in the long term through repair, reuse and recycling. In this context, current research focuses on various areas, including the efficient use of rare raw materials and the networking of waste management in rural and urban areas. Innovative materials and new business models play a crucial role in the development of sustainable solutions. Battery research for electromobility and the development of circularly designed products, such as smartphones, are particularly important. These topics are covered in a comprehensive Policy brief treated.

For further information about the exhibition and related topics, those interested can visit the Forum Wissen website or contact the project manager, Prof. Dr. Margarete Vöhringer from the Georg-August University of Göttingen. The event will be an impressive example of practical environmental protection and the possibilities of using resources in the spirit of the circular economy.
