University of Göttingen: Psychology degree wins in the CHE ranking!

On May 9, 2025, the Center for University Development (CHE) published its comprehensive ranking, which shows the University of Göttingen in an excellent light. In the field of psychology, the university received consistently positive reviews after students expressed their experiences and opinions on various aspects of the course. The feedback from the participants included, among other things, the introduction to scientific work, the organization of studies, the equipment of the library as well as the support from teachers and the IT infrastructure.

Psychology was the only subject that was taken into account by the students in this evaluation. The ranking not only evaluates the course content and research skills, but also the support that students receive at the beginning of their studies. What is particularly noteworthy is that Göttingen is in the top group in the “Citations per publication” category, an indication of the high quality of the research.

Focus on study offerings and response rates

The CHE ranking included a total of nine subjects and subject groups at different universities. Psychology was also covered here, taking into account both bachelor's and master's degree programs that are open for the winter semester 2025/2026 and lead to the state examination in psychotherapy.¹ According to the results of this survey, the response rate for the surveys was 80.8% in the departments, while the students had a response rate of 17.7% and the professors had a response rate of 45.9%.²

Indicators for evaluating the degree programs included, among other things, the integration of lecturers from practice, measures to promote the employability of graduates and tried-and-tested elements within the degree program, such as practical semesters. In addition, the facilities of the departments in terms of research laboratories and libraries as well as the availability of literature and learning resources were taken into account.

Promotion and quality seal

The study particularly highlighted the support of start-ups and the promotion of young scientists. As part of the ranking, the international orientation of the degree programs and specific measures for career orientation by the students were also evaluated.

The BaPsy aptitude test is recognized for the bachelor's degree program in psychology. Students also have the opportunity to evaluate digital teaching elements and assess their integration into the course of study. The ranking is rounded off by the award of a quality seal for psychological bachelor's degree programs.³

In summary, the CHE ranking shows that the University of Göttingen not only offers excellent study conditions in psychology, but also plays an important role in research. The complete results can be viewed on the website www.heystudium.de/ranking.
