Hagen Sociology Days: Inspiring exchange for students!

The 5th Hagen Sociology Days took place at the FernUniversität Hagen on September 22, 2025, under the technical leadership of Dr. Julian Möhring and Dr. Patrick Heiser. The two-day event was aimed particularly at students, especially those who often do not have the opportunity to actively participate in campus life due to distance learning. The Sociology Days have a long tradition and were launched ten years ago and are organized every two years by mid-level academic staff. They provide a forum in which the concerns of students are discussed.

This special sociology event was characterized by a relaxed program that offered numerous opportunities for exchange with fellow students and teachers. Participants were able to take part in workshops that were officially counted as credit points for bachelor's and master's degree programs. A campus festival also marked the ceremonial conclusion of the Sociology Days and created a positive atmosphere among those present, who continued to network with each other after the official program items.

Diverse topics and formats

The program of the Hagen Sociology Days was diverse and offered exciting perspectives and innovative topics to both beginners and experienced sociologists. The events included, among other things, brown bag lunch lectures, lectures and practical insights that took place in a relaxed atmosphere. A special keynote by Prof. Dr. Sighard Neckel dealt with the social-ecological transformation conflict and the challenges that arise in achieving climate goals.

Students were able to experience the inspiring lectures and discussion groups in a cinema atmosphere where popcorn was not missing. The spatial design of the events as well as the culinary offerings with live music also enabled numerous opportunities for networking and exchange in an informal environment.

Career prospects for sociologists

The waiver of credit points and the opportunity to network are not only important for the current course of study, but they also open up professional perspectives. Sociologists who complete their studies via distance learning can be employed in a variety of fields.

The possible career fields are diverse and range from management consulting to human resources to social and traffic planning. The average salaries vary depending on the specialization: A market researcher can expect a starting salary of around 3,000 euros gross per month, while aspiring management consultants receive an average of 3,300 euros. Newsrooms and agencies, on the other hand, often offer starting salaries of less than 2,000 euros gross per month.

In addition, career changers also have the opportunity to gain a foothold in many of these areas. However, it should be noted that competition in the job market from graduates from related fields such as business administration and psychology is also present.

In summary, it can be said that the Hagen Sociology Days not only serve as a platform for academic exchange, but also act as a springboard for future professional challenges in the field of sociology. The organization, the relaxed atmosphere and a varied program make this event an important event for sociology students.
