Concert highlight: Turkish film music enchants Essen on May 24th!

On May 24, 2025, the Nefes Choir and Ensemble will host a special concert in Essen that will take guests on a musical journey through time. Several arrangements from the Turkish film music of the Yeşilçam cinema, which became famous between the 1950s and 1990s, are on the program. Loud uni-due.de The event begins at 8 p.m. in the Chorforum Essen and promises an impressive evening with a three-part choir performance. The ensemble is supported by talented instrumentalists who play, among other things, the clarinet, guitar and bağlama.

The Nefes Choir was founded in 2009 at the University of Duisburg-Essen under the direction of Enver Yalçın Özdiker. The main goal of the choir is to preserve Turkish song and culture and to promote the integration of Turkish culture into student life at the university. Tickets for the concert are available at the box office or can be reserved by email to nefes@uni-due.de. Further information can be found on the choir's official website: Nefe's music.

The role of Turkish music in Germany

The event is part of a broader cultural movement that highlights the importance of Turkish music in Germany. Turkish music has deeply rooted trends in this country that go back to the 1960s, when numerous guest workers came to Germany. maviblau.com reports that the first Turkish songs of the time often dealt with the themes of homesickness and recruitment. Over time, especially from 1973 onwards, the music changed as the guest workers increasingly became immigrants. This led to the emergence of arabesque music, which formed a synthesis of various styles and played a formative role in German musical life.

Another milestone in development was the military coup in Turkey in the 80s, which brought many political musicians to Germany. Turkish media that emerged at this time also shaped the music world. Particularly striking is the rise of German-Turkish hip hop, which reflected a new self-confidence among Turkish youth. In years of research, musicologist Martin Greve has discovered that Turkish music in Germany is considered diverse and is constantly evolving.

Despite these developments, there is a lack of institutions and training centers for Turkish music in Germany. However, Greve, who has been working as a researcher at the Orient Institute in Istanbul since 2011, sees growing interest and new projects that promote the integration of Turkish music into the German music world.
