New recharge bike” in Paderborn: Students experience exercise and enjoyment!

On May 21, 2025, the University of Paderborn launched an innovative initiative as part of student health management (SGM) with the new “recharge bike”. The new special bicycle, which is equipped with three wheels and a solar roof, aims to invite students to take more physical exercise and take cognitive breaks. The bikes are available between 12:45 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the location is conveniently located between the G lecture hall and the grill café.

Particularly noteworthy are the extras that the “recharge bike” offers. In addition to the opportunity to explore the surrounding area in an environmentally friendly way, students can use free play and break materials such as Viking chess and badminton during the break. The design of the bike was based on the wishes of the students, which should further increase its popularity. Smaller technical details such as a mini photovoltaic system with a 1.7 kW battery allow users to charge their smartphones while having a relaxing time.

Culinary expansions through cooperation

A cooperation with the Paderborn Student Union further enriches the offering. The aim of this collaboration is to create added value for students through enjoyment and exercise offerings. This not only includes culinary offerings such as French press coffee, but also comfortable Swedish chairs that invite you to linger. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to brighten students' academic lives and offer them moments of relaxation.

The Paderborn Student Union operates in five areas: catering, living space, student financing, child care and cultural event support. It is therefore aimed not only at students at the University of Paderborn, but also at those at Hamm-Lippstadt University. The 1,519 residential spaces provided as part of the housing offering are spread across seven residential complexes, including five in Paderborn and one each in Hamm and Lippstadt. Special needs are also taken into account: There are 151 barrier-free places and 28 residences aimed at families.

Diverse offers for students

In addition to housing and meals, the student union also offers support in the area of student financing, including BAföG applications and student loan offers. An important part of the offer remains individual support, especially for students with children. The “MS-Kunigunde” and “Uni-Zwerge” daycare centers offer loving care for up to 150 children and provide warm lunches.

To promote internationality and cultural export, the student union organizes numerous cultural events, often in the grill café, which is equipped with appropriate technology.

To further support students, the central student advisory service has launched workshops entitled “Studying with a Plan”. Topics such as effective semester management, exam management and special learning strategies are covered in order to best prepare students for the challenges of their studies. For example, workshops on efficient learning techniques and time planning will take place on May 15, 2025.

Overall, with these initiatives, the University of Paderborn shows how important the well-being and holistic support of its students are in order to enable them not only academic but also personal success. Innovative concepts such as the “recharge bike” and the student union’s comprehensive services create an attractive environment that supports students in their daily university life.
