Professor Majchrzak: Return to Bochum for digital transformation!

On April 2, 2025, the Ruhr University Bochum will welcome a significant new addition to the Faculty of Computer Science. Prof. Dr. Tim Majchrzak, who worked at the University of Agder (UiA) in Norway for over a decade, takes over the professorship for Computing, Technology and Society. Most recently, Majchrzak conducted research in northern Europe and has held the position of professor of information systems for the past five years. In this role, he dealt intensively with issues of crisis management and avoidance, always with a strong focus on interdisciplinary approaches.

Majchrzak was also a member of the Center for Integrated Emergency Management research group at the University of Agder. Here he worked on technological innovations designed to optimize emergency preparedness and management. His return home is not only a personal step, but also an extension of his commitment to research for digital transformation.

Management of the CAIS

In addition to his professorship, Majchrzak will serve as the new scientific director of the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS). This institute was founded in November 2016 as a non-profit limited liability company and began its work in spring 2017. It has been funded by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia since April 2021 and is considered a central institute for digitalization research.

The CAIS focuses on three main research programs: Digital Democratic Innovations, Educational Technologies and Artificial Intelligence, and Social Cohesion in Digital Media Environments. These programs are designed to be interdisciplinary and attract experts from the social sciences, humanities and computer science. Majchrzak will work together with Prof. Dr. Christiane Eilders will lead the CAIS's research work, which should further deepen his extensive experience in the areas of information systems and crisis management.

Academic background

Tim Majchrzak completed both his bachelor's and master's degrees in business informatics at the University of Münster. In 2011 he received his doctorate in economics and completed his habilitation in 2015 at the University of Münster. From 2013 to 2015 he was a substitute professor for business informatics at the University of Cologne before taking up his position at the University of Agder.

The Chancellor of the Ruhr University, Dr. Christina Reinhardt, highlighted the social relevance of Majchrzak's research. His expertise will contribute to solving current challenges in the digital age, particularly through the popular fellowship programs at CAIS, which attract national and international scholars.

Overall, Tim Majchrzak's return to the Ruhr University Bochum is seen as an important step to further advance interdisciplinary research and the dialogue between science and society in the area of ​​digital transformation. The CAIS has set itself the goal of actively shaping digital change and researching the effects of digitalization on relevant social issues.
