Future boost for cultural studies: NFDI4Culture starts new phase!

On July 4, 2025, the Joint Science Conference (GWK) met and made crucial decisions for the future of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) in Germany. Among the initiatives presented, the “NFDI4Culture” consortium, which is co-sponsored by the University of Paderborn, received a positive funding decision for its second project phase. This decision represents a milestone for research in architecture, design and art history, as the consortium brings together data from over 100 partners.

“NFDI4Culture” was launched in 2020 and, in the first funding phase until 2025, was dedicated to establishing a Germany-wide research data infrastructure. It offers a wide range of services, including consulting and training, repositories for long-term data backup and data linking tools. Prof. Dr. Thomas Tröster from the University of Paderborn emphasized the importance of continuing “NFDI4Culture” and emphasized how important it is to further strengthen the emerging structures.

Goals and visions of the second funding phase

The coming phase, which will begin in 2025, follows the motto “Shared Data, Shared Practice, Shared Knowledge”. The consortium plans to expand and stabilize its structures in order to promote the transfer of knowledge between research, politics and society. Particular attention is paid to answering relevant questions about research software and artificial intelligence. The second funding phase will see the addition of 17 new partners, opening up additional data areas, particularly in the performing arts and film heritage.

The focus from 2025 will include the topics of data sovereignty, resilience, data quality and the use of AI. Integration into European infrastructures, such as the European Open Science Cloud, is also planned.

Events and community engagement

NFDI4Culture organizes a variety of events focusing on active research data management, software development and legal aspects. These include workshops, forums, working groups, hackathons, bar camps and the annual NFDI4Culture Music Award ceremony. These events are designed to promote dynamic community building and support exchange between different disciplines.

An overview of upcoming NFDI4Culture events is available, although in some cases prior registration is required. There is also comprehensive documentation of past events to make the knowledge and experiences gained accessible to future participants. NFDI4Culture also runs regular series of events, such as the Culture Community Plenary or the Linked Open Data Working Group. These activities are intended to stimulate dialogue within the community and promote engaged collaboration.

uni-paderborn.de reports that the decision to continue “NFDI4Culture” points the way for the future research landscape. The far-reaching consequences of this decision will be reflected in the strengthening of research data infrastructures and the promotion of broad scientific collaboration. Given the prospects opened up by artificial intelligence and new technologies, the mission of “NFDI4Culture” is more relevant than ever.

nfdi4culture.de ensures that the community is actively involved in the research data management process and remains committed to driving developments that are important to science.
