Weimar Children's University starts: polar bears, music and saving books!

The Weimar Children's University will start in the summer semester of 2025 with a varied lecture program aimed at children aged eight and over. The first lecture entitled “Of Cars and Polar Bears” will take place on Wednesday, April 23rd, at 4 p.m. in Lecture Hall A at the Bauhaus University Weimar. Dr. Steffen de Rudder, Professor of Design and Urban Development I, will deal with topics that touch on both ecological and social aspects. Among other things, the question is raised whether polar bears could become extinct due to car emissions and what possibilities there are to save nature while at the same time promoting progress. University of Weimar reports that the children's university lectures are both educational and entertaining.

In addition, the second lecture will take place on May 7th in the Fürstenhaus ballroom on Democracy Square. Annika Bosch from the Franz Liszt University of Music Weimar will address the topic of “Animals in Music”. The students can look forward to exciting questions, such as which compositions imitate animals and which methods exist for imitating animals using voice or instruments.

Lecture series and registration

The third lecture, led by Alexandra Vorik, will take place on May 21st in Lecture Hall A at the Bauhaus University. She will deal with the “evolution of voices” and shed light on the connection between language and music. The lecture series concludes with an event on June 4th by Dr. Laura Völkel, who will report on the rescue of the books after the devastating fire in the Anna Amalia Library in September 2004.

Registration is required for all four events and is possible from March 19th. Anyone who takes part in all lectures will receive a bachelor's certificate in addition to a student ID card. The website www.kinderuni-weimar.de offers further information on registration and individual events. It should be noted that the venue and lectures are barrier-free, making the children's university accessible to everyone.

In addition to the regular lectures, which are suitable for children from the 4th grade, the Weimar Children's University is characterized by special events, such as a campus day for school classes. The children's university started its 22nd year of lectures in the winter semester of 2024. Prof. Harald Lesch, known for his popular science books and television programs, is the patron of this initiative. He explains scientific relationships in an understandable and engaging way, which encourages a fascination with science in young minds. Ulrich Dillmann from the Weimar Adult Education Center had positive comments about Lesch's commitment: "Sharing his knowledge in such an appealing way is a benefit for the children's university." Weimar Classic Foundation adds that the children's university offerings provide an important foundation for early education and creative thinking.

The Weimar Children's University is not only an educational platform, but also a place that stimulates creativity and curiosity. The upcoming lectures promise to awaken the young participants' interest in science and art and give them exciting insights into the diverse connections between nature, music and culture. Registration is now open and interested children are cordially invited to take part in this unique educational initiative Weimar Children's University.
