Erasmus+: Students discover new horizons in the Czech Republic!

In a remarkable initiative, Katharina Gärtner and Dr. Oliver Schöndube from the University of Vechta the music education department Palacký University Olomouc in the Czech Republic. This exchange, supported by the Erasmus+ program, represents a significant step in international collaboration in the field of music education.

The bilateral exchange began with a visit by the team from Olomouc to the University of Vechta in May 2025. This laid the foundation for the exchange of ideas and practical experiences that now took place in the Czech Republic. On one of the seminar days, the students of Palacký University had the opportunity to test themselves in musical practice, which was a valuable experience for many.

Exchange of ideas and experiences

The seminars promoted a great openness and a willingness to deal with new topics, both vocally and instrumentally. Gabriela Coufalová, a lecturer at Palacký University, highlighted the advantages of this cooperation between universities. What is particularly noteworthy is that the students reported that the exchange at the beginning of the semester helped them to make contacts with new fellow students and to develop creative ideas for cooperative learning.

The Erasmus+ program plays a crucial role in promoting such international cooperation. It not only supports students, but also university employees in the form of training stays abroad. This can be done through workshops, seminars and job shadowing, with the accommodation costs being subsidized depending on the country.

Benefits and support from Erasmus+

Carrying out Staff Mobility Weeks at many universities enables the exchange of information between international colleagues and strengthens the employees' own skills. The conditions for these mobilities are clearly defined: a minimum stay of two days and a maximum period of two months must be observed. A good knowledge of English or knowledge of the language of the host country is also a prerequisite for participation.

Students can also benefit from Erasmus+. The program is aimed at various target groups, including bachelor's and master's students as well as doctoral students enrolled at universities participating in the Erasmus+ program. However, the stays must be relevant to the study goal and personal development and be part of the study program.

Financial support for students is provided through scholarships that contribute to travel and accommodation costs. Fees for tuition and access to facilities are usually exempt for Erasmus+ students. In addition, additional resources are offered for students with disabilities as well as special language support.

The recognition of the study achievements takes place through the creation of a learning agreement before the stay and the subsequent proof of achievements by the receiving university. This ensures that the ECTS credits are recognized by the sending institution.

Overall, Vechta's visit to Palacký University shows how important exchange in higher education is in order to develop innovative approaches and perspectives in music education and to strengthen international networks. Such programs not only offer valuable learning opportunities, but also the chance to expand professional networks and promote cultural understanding. The Erasmus+ initiative remains a key pillar for international cooperation in the education sector.
